High Point University Women’s Basketball’s Camryn Brown Named Big South Player of the Year

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – High Point University women’s basketball senior Camryn Brown was named the Big South Player of the Year, along with receiving First Team All-Conference honors the league announced Monday afternoon (March 9). Brown was also High Point’s representative on the Big South All-Academic Team and was named the conference’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

In addition to Brown, sophomore Skyler Curran was named First Team All-Conference and redshirt freshman Jenson Edwards garnered a nod to the All-Freshman Team.

Brown jumped into second place in scoring in the Big South after Saturday’s win over UNC Asheville, averaging 17.0 points per game this season. She’s also third in assists, dishing out an average of 5.2 assists per game, and sixth in usage, averaging 35.3 minutes per game with six 40-minute performances this season.

On Feb. 1 against Winthrop, she set program records for points (44), three-pointers made (10), three-pointers attempted (20), and field goals made in the Division I era of women’s basketball at High Point (16). Her points and three-pointers made were not only school records, she also set the Big South record for points in a game and tied the mark for three-point makes. Brown currently sits sixth on HPU’s Division I scoring list with 1,305 points (19 away from fifth place) and in 14th place on the all-time scoring list. She sits atop the Division I list in assists with 468 career helpers, second in three-pointers made with 243, and second in three-point attempts with 677.

Brown was also named a CoSIDA Academic All-American earlier today, just the third CoSIDA Academic All-America award in program history. She joins two-time winner Leslie Cook, who earned the honors in 2006 and again in 2007. Cook was also the last Panther to win the Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Brown makes it four such awards in program history.

Curran was the leading scorer on the team for much of the season before Brown passed her on the final day of the regular season. She is right behind Brown with an average of 16.9 PPG this season for third in the conference and grabs an average of 6.5 rebounds per game for 11th in the Big South and the team lead. Curran recorded five double-doubles on the year, led the team in scoring 13 times, with 24 games in double-digits, and led the team in rebounding 13 times.

Edwards missed seven games at the beginning of the season after suffering an injury 20 seconds into the second game of the year. She was back for all the games in 2020 and finished fourth on the team in scoring, averaging 7.5 PPG. She finished the season strong, recording double-doubles in back-to-back games and ended the year averaging 14.5 PPG and 8.5 RPG over the last four games. She also saw significant usage in the final weeks of the regular season, playing 40 minutes in five of the last seven games and averaging 38.9 minutes per game over that span.

HPU is off until the quarterfinals of the 2020 Hercules Tires Big South Women’s Basketball Tournament where the Panthers will play the winner of the first-round game between UNC Asheville and Charleston Southern. High Point will play the winner on Thursday (March 13) in Radford, Va. at 8 p.m. with the winner advancing to the semifinals on Friday.
