LOCALS COMPLETE BASKETBALL SEASON AT GUILFORD COLLEGE

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Freshman Julius Burch (Greensboro, N.C./Southern Guilford), freshman Tyler Dearman (Greensboro, N.C./Southern Guilford), redshirt-junior Jaylen Gore (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford), and sophomore Eli Short (Greensboro, N.C./Page) recently completed the 2019-20 basketball season at Guilford College.

Burch, a 6-3 forward, played a key role for the Quakers off the bench. He appeared in all 26 games and logged over 14 minutes per game. Burch averaged 2.3 points and 4.3 rebounds per contest. His best performance came in Guilford’s 84-67 win over LaGrange College December 29 when he scored a season-high 10 points and collected six rebounds.

Dearman, a 6-3 swingman, played in all 26 games for Guilford with five starts. He ranked fourth on the team in scoring with 10.5 points per game. Dearman also averaged 5.2 rebounds per contest, which stood third on the team. He also made a club-high 49 three-point shots. His best performance came in Guilford’s 70-69 win over second-ranked Emory University December 30 when he tallied 23 points and collected a season-high 10 rebounds. Dearman had four 20-point games including a season-high 25-point effort in the Quakers’ 99-87 win over Emory & Henry College January 15. He led Guilford’s scorers in four games.

Gore, a 5-11 point guard, started in all 26 games for the Quakers. The redshirt-junior averaged 8.1 points and 3.3 rebounds per contest and ranked third in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) with 3.9 assists per game. His best performance came during Guilford’s game with Hampden-Sydney College January 4, when he matched his career high with 22 points and added six rebounds and three assists. His buzzer-beating three-pointer gave visiting Guilford a 70-69 win over second-ranked Emory University December 30. The shot was featured on ESPN’s SportsCenter.

Short, a 6-0 guard, played a limited role for Guilford off the bench, appearing in 19 games and averaging just under seven minutes per contest. He finished the season with 10 points, 17 rebounds, and 11 assists. Short had two points and four rebounds in a December win over Eastern Mennonite University. He scored a career-high three points in the win over Emory and in a January 15 victory over Emory & Henry College.

Coach Tom Palombo’s Quakers advanced to the quarterfinals of the ODAC Tournament before falling to Roanoke College, 73-66. Guilford enjoyed wins over second-ranked Emory and number-two Randolph-Macon College and finished with an 18-8 record (10-6 ODAC). Palombo could return as many as 15 letter winners from this year’s team including Gore, Burch, Dearman, and Short.
