The Founding Father of the UNCG Men’s Basketball Program has left us:Spartan pioneer Jim Swiggett remembered as the man that got the men’s basketball rolling, at UNC-Greensboro

We look today, at the obituary of Jim Swiggett.

He spent a long time teaching at UNCG, but the most important thing he did was starting the men’s basketball team. That was in the late 1960s when the school was transitioning from an all-women’s school to just starting to admit men.

Those first teams played in the Dixie Conference and weren’t very good, but he didn’t have a lot to work with. He’s a member of the UNCG Sports Hall of Fame and, although now somewhat forgotten, he made a significant contribution as a founding father of what has developed into the excellent program that people see today.
