It was very close to state championship conditions at Grimsley on Wednesday night as High Point Central upset #1 seed Grimsley in girls 4-A basketball action. It may have only been round number two but the way the crowd was into this game you would think that the Black Bison were playing Grimsley for the state crown.
Grimsley led nearly the entire game but HPC outscored the Whirlies 20-9 in the fourth quarter to win the big game. Central wrapped up the game at the foul line and went on to win the contest 65-56. Coach Kenny Carter was going crazy on the HPC bench and he jumped up and down and stomped while his girls were on the way to victory.
High Point Central’s experience proved to be the difference in the game and by connecting on those key free throws the Bison wrote their ticket for Round number three. Kenny Carter of HPC is without a doubt the most animated coach we have ever had in Guilford County and I’m talking boys or girls, Carter tops them all. If you can think of someone that is more into it than Carter please let me know.
The cinderella story came to end as the Northeast Guilford Rams lost on the road at Western Harnett 60-31. In other girls action the Dudley Panthers got back on top crushing Harnett Central 74-43. Helen Terry led the Panthers with 20 and now it looks like Kris Britton’s Panthers are ready for the long run at a state title. Siera Little is still missing but well watch and see if she comes back soon.
Other area winners on Wednesday were Northwest Guilford over North Mecklenburg 51-50, Page won big over East Rowan 63-41(Page will be at Northwest on Friday for the Sectional Final), Ragsdale rolled 58-47 past West Rowan, and Eastern Guilford defeated Warren County 62-37. The girls will be back in action on Friday in the Sectional Finals. The boys continue play this evening.
