Several important high school basketball championships will be determined tonight and greensborosports.com will be out in full force covering these tournaments.
The biggest event will take place at the John Primm Gym on Hicone Road. This is the home of the Northeast Guilford Rams and they will be hosting the Dudley Panthers in both the girls and boys Triad 3-A title games. The girls game gets under way at 6pm and will feature #1 seed Dudley(19-5) against #2 seed NEG(19-5). Should be a great contest as the two teams split during the regular season and Dudley has well-known 6’4 center Sierra Little and NEG do-everything G/F Mercedes King. Watch out for the freshman guard for Dudley Brianna Patterson, she is quick like a ‘waterbug’.(whatever the heck that is, I’ve heard that term for many years)
The boys game will be equally exciting, with Dudley(19-4) seeded #1 and NEG(22-4) the number two seed. NEG and Dudley split their regular season games(1-1) and on Thursday night Dudley routed Rockingham County 75-53 and NEG bested Bartlett Yancey 67-45. Dudley has big Kenny Belton at 6’8 along with super-point guard Josh Chavis and NEG relies heavily on Mezie Uzochukwu and gets excellent balance from it’s supporting cast. Uzochukwu had 25 pts. and 17 rebouds vs. BY.  When Mezie gets a rebound he always looks for something intelligent to do with the basketball.
The boys game at NEG will follow the young ladies contest and will be heard in it’s entirety on AM 950 WPET the local high school radio outlet. Jim Modlin will be there and we will have Paul Lambeth in High Point for the Metro 4-A finals and PTL will have updates on AM 950 on the major girls championhsip featuring Grimsley vs. High Point Central.
Paul will stick around after the girls game and give us news on the High Point Central boys battling East Forsyth for the Metro men’s title. Keep it on AM 950 and greensborosports.com. The Page and Northwest Guilford boys both lost on Thursday night in their quest for the gold and we had Greg Johnson from the Max Meeks Morning Show calling with the updates on Page-HPC and NWG-EF.  Max in the Morning and Culler’s Store are two High Point institutions.
The Ragsdale girls won the Mid-Piedmont 3-A girls tournament championship game on Thursday night in Asheboro, with the Tigers defeating the Eastern Randolph Wildcats 68-64. Ragsdale heads into the sectionals with a 23-4 record and ER falls to 23-2. The Eastern Guilford girls dropped the North State 2-A title into the hands of Reidsville as the EG Wildcats fell 65-61 in the final. In a regular season game, the Greensboro Day School boys(29-1) beat High Point Wesleyan 79-63.
We’ll have all the Championship Friday details coming up beginning at 7pm on AM 950 and we will have Doug Cockman and Jimmy Fulmer at the IPD Eatery Sportsdesk bringing us a roundup of the area scores. Paul Lambeth, Jim Modlin, Greg Johnson these men have the county and the Greensboro Sports scene covered. Jason Gaertner of the N&R and Big Ben Derrick of Fitness Today may also throw a few bones our way.
*****Speaking of bones, I was talking to Bob Via, the NEG Ram assistant football coach and former Page Pirate mentor, and he showed me something very catchy. He had a text message for his son Michael Via and it was from Doc Holliday one of the coaches on the staff at the University of Florida, the college football National Champions. Seems the Gators want Michael to come and play in Gainesville. Notre Dame, Kentucky, Virginia Tech, Tennessee, North Carolina, N.C. State, and all the others want Michael too. He’s a junior at NEG and is 6’6(nearly 6’7) and weighs on a good day, say 245-250. Michael will be a starting offensive linemen at some Division I school and they will be lucky to have him. I’ve been promoting this kid since he was in the 8th grade and I’m still here to tell you he is going places. In fact Wake Forest and coach Jim Grobe are having him over to the Demon Deacons’ Winston-Salem facilities on Saturday. I only require a 25% agent’s commission.***** Â

Will Grimsley Girl take the Metro conference tonight?
I was taking the Dudley boys and Northeast girls and I based that on my Great Eight rankings and I had the Grimsley girls also based on the poll rankings at greensborosports.com. I can’t go against my poll, even college coaches are calling me now asking about local players based on the Great Eight poll. A side note, the Northeast Guilford girls have not lost a game on the court in the new gym at NEG. They are 12-0 on that court since mid-December.
