Three out of Three is not bad at all

Three teams left in the Regionals for the area basketball schools so far this week and all three have claimed victories.  Already in the finals we have the Dudley girls and boys, plus the Grimsley girls and the High Point Andrews boys could join them with a win over Charlotte Olympic on Friday night in Winston-Salem.

The Dudley boys won over Wilson Hunt on Wednesday night 63-51 and they will meet Kinston on Saturday afternoon at 3pm in the Regional Finals in Greenville, N.C. at East Carolina University.  Kenny Belton has been the big force for the Panthers(24-4) throughout the playoffs and he led Dudley again on Wednesday with 26 points.  Belton is so big and strong that most opposing teams have no answer for him or the Panthers.  Kinston is 28-2 after their 74-66 win against Southern Lee.  Dudley versus Kinston on Saturday for the right to play for the state title and it would be Dudley’s 4th straight trip with back-to-back titles under their belt and Belton on the war-path on the inside.  Belton is a lot like Eric Hicks, only taller.

The Dudley girls were on the run in Greenville back on Tuesday evening and they left Wilson Beddingfield in the dust as the Panthers won big, 83-65.  The young ladies from Duldey(24-6) will face off with Southwest Edgecombe(24-2) for the East Region title on Saturday, 1pm at JH Rose High School in Greenville.  In the win over Beddingfield, Dudley had 5 players in double figure scoring with Montague Austin leading the way with 21, Sierra Little had 13, Kendra Porter added 11, and Helen Terry and Nikki Kee had 10 points each.  The Dudley girls are running and they could be running right into Raleigh, where the 3-A title games will be played next week.

The WhirlieGirls of Grimsley are now 29-1 and will be playing for the 4-A West Regional title Sauturday afternoon at 5pm in Winston-Salem.  Grimsley led Charlotte Harding 60-39 after 3 quarters and went on to win 69-55 on Wednesday night.  GHS was led by Kristen Fields’ 21 points but Coach Phil Weaver played nine girls and eight scored so the WhirlieGirls are showing balance and team-work in their run for the state championship.  Grimsley will meet West Charlotte(25-3) in Saturday’s championship game.  This is already the best Grimsley girls team in school-history and coaches Weaver, Phil Barry, Wayne Butler, Hank Bullard, and Felicia Tate have a right to be very proud of this squad.

Don’t forget High Point Andrews, coached by former Dudley boys assistant coach James Abell, will be in action Friday night at 7pm versus Charlotte Olympic.  The Red Raiders are 21-7, while Olympic comes into Winston-Salem with a 15-12 record.
