Grimsley gets over the Hump topping NWG and now faces EF for Title-Ragsdale will host ER for Jamestown Crown

I pulled off the Trifecta on Wednesday.  Middle School track meet at 4:45, Grimsley-NWG baseball at a few minutes past 6, and then a PONY baseball game at West Market Street Fields at 8:15.  Greensborosports.com is making the rounds.

The Grimsley win over Northwest was the game of the day.  The Whirlies had lost to NWG twice already this season and the man that had mowed down GHS was on the hill for the third encounter.  They say it’s hard to beat a team three times in the same year and that the third time is the charm and to all those conjures Grimsley would say YES.

Grimsley defeated NWG 7-4 and now will face East Forsyth for the Metro 4-A conference championship tonight at EF.  Game time is 7pm and this will be the third meeting between the two clubs and EF has won both of the two previous battles this year.

East Forsyth beat PAGE in what must have been one heck of a comeback with the final score, EF 11-10 over the Pirates.  Page was up 9-6 at 8pm and later the Pirates moved out in front by five runs before East went on a roll to move into tonight’s finals.  East has the Swab brothers; Kenny and his brother the catcher, Zac Truesdale, and Tyler Hanover among their top names.

Grimsley would have hosted the final if Page would have pulled off the upset of EF but as it stands the Whirlies are glad to be in in the Championship Game.  On Wednesday at NWG the Whirlies hit Viking pitcher Logan Self hard and Alan Craven was one of the GHS giants that got his money’s worth.  Alan went 4-4 with four runs scored and hit a solo HR for run number seven for GHS.  Alan also scored run number six when he came home from third base on a ball that went out into left field after an errant throw from NWG catcher John Neese.  Alan Craven bats in the lead off spot so watch out for this kid.  In addition to all of the above, Craven has himself a souvenir.  Ken Daly’s dad jumped the outfield fence and got the ball that AC hit out for the homer and presented it to Alan after the game.

As far as the pitching goes Clint Moore was the man on the mound for Grimsley.  Clint keeps his team in the game at all times and does not let it get to him when he gives up runs, including a homer late in the contest that made it a 7-4 ballgame after GHS had led 5-0.  Clint struck out 7 and his composure on the hill was incredible.  The kid knows how to conduct business.  He called his own pitches most of the game but when GHS catcher Gabe Dimock made a call or two that got away, Moore was there to reassure his battery-mate and let him know that the Whirlies were ready to finish off the upset.  But as coach Alan Ashkinazy will tell you, it wasn’t an upset.  The Whirlies were due.

Grimsley is expected to send senior Ken Daly to the mound tonight and watch out for his dad the former quarterback at Wake Forest, Mr. Daly may have some more tricks up his sleeve.  Aaron Jones and Cody Walker will be two other GHS kids that might have a few things to say when they step into the batter’s box at EF.

Southeast Guilford fell hard to Eastern Randolph on Wednesday afternoon in Jamestown.  The Falcons trailed ER 6-0 early before tacking on 9 runs, but it still wasn’t enough as ER stopped SEG 12-9.  The Jim Modlin “dream matchup” won’t happen as now Ragsdale will host ER for the Jamestown Crown.

Ragsdale knocked off Randleman 4-0 on Wednesday night to set up the final with ER this evening at 7pm.  The Ragsdale Tigers got great work from pitcher Catlin Carter on the hill and at the plate Jason Wallace continues to shine with former SEG Falcon Brent O’Berry carrying a red-hot bat for the Tigers too.  Coach Donnie Maness and Ragsdale know it won’t be easy to take the Jamestown Crown because they have already beaten ER twice this season and you know what we’ve been saying about that third time around.

RHS versus ER tonight at 7pm, in the city that Jim Modlin built.  They call it JAMESTOWN.

I made it over to the Middle School track meet involving Kernodle, Allen, and Kiser on Wednesday afternoon at Smith High School.  It was a perfect day for running and for doing the field events.  Kernodle was the winner making them a perfect 7-0 and City-County Champs for the season.

I got to see Ron Davidson and his son Eric again and also got to meet Ron’s young daughter who runs the 400 and 800 in her spare time.  I also ran into the postman William Everette and his son William Everette II.  WE II participates for Allen Middle and he won the shot put with a throw of 44 feet and the kid is only in the 7th grade.  Eric Davidson throws the javelin so maybe ED and WE II need to get together and have a throw-up or maybe better a throw-off.  It was a great day to be around the track and how about Coach Johnson and those Kernodle Cougar Kids.

Closing out the day I stopped off at the West Market Street Fields and watched some PONY baseball.  Keith Miller told me that his second baseaman Tiger Miller was ready to lead Pleasant Garden into battle against a team from Northeast Guilford and the Tigerman and his PG buddies ran their record to 2-0 on the young season with a 4-1 win over the NEG crew.  Tiger’s team should be strong and if his brother and Agent Adam Miller can get Tiger to all the games on time this might be the year of the “Tiger from Pleasant Garden.”
