Whirlies, Cowboys, Tigers take Titles

What do Alan Ashkinazy, Reid Holmes, and Donnie Maness all have in common?  They just signed up with Geico.  No, none of them have a beard or collect green lizards but all three coaches saw their teams win conference baseball titles on Thursday night.

Grimsley knocked off #1 seed East Forsyth to claim the Metro title, Southwest Guilford owns the Piedmont-Triad 3-A trophy, and Ragsdale has the Jamestown Crown which this year goes to the Mid-Piedmont 3-A winner.

GHS shut out East 4-0 and the Whirlies got excellent pitching from senior Ken Daly.(Daly was considered to be the #3 starter for GHS when the first pitch crossed the plate Thursday but now who knows?)  The defense backed up Ken and the Whirlies got the win in what could be one of the biggest victories in Grimsley baseball history.  Andrew Justice played great defense at shortstop and leftfielder Stevie Ray Todd robbed Kenny Swab of a major hit that could have created a key turning point in the contest.  Todd also laid down a big-time bunt that gave the Whirlies a huge boost.  Justice and freshman Cal Sutphin made it happen for GHS at the plate and with sore-armed Clint Moore moving to second base for Thursday’s game Grimsley is telling us they own the TITLE and they are not ready to see this season end.

The SWG Cowboys are now 20-5 after they defeated the Glenn Bobcats 3-2 Thursday evening.  I don’t have major details on Southwest but hopefully my High Point source Greg Johnson will send us some hard copy this weekend.  SWG could be facing Ragsdale down the road in the 3-A state playoffs.

Ragsdale ran their record to 22-3 with the Tigers 9-3 win over Eastern Randolph Thursday.  Ragsdale has been dominant lately and Catlin Carter, Brent O’Berry, and Ben Fultz made sure the Tigers were right on target again in the finals.  Carter, O’Berry, and Fultz combined for 6 of the 9 RHS hits and sophomore David Coffey grabbed the win, he’s 8-1.  Big Jim Modlin will be sending us more on the Tigers in the comment box and Ogi Overman will have full details on the RHS championhsip in this week’s Jamestown News.

Our teams will not be back in action again until next Friday when the state playoffs get under way.  Keep it on greensborosports.com for full details and just ask the Moores, the Millers, the Modlins, the Davidsons, the Dalys, the Durhams, the Johnsons, the Browns, the Smiths, the Carrs or the Sheltons, greensborosports.com has it covered.

  1. congatulations to the grimsley whirlies for a well played game-its all about who is peaking at the right time and right now it is the whirlies – hollywood hulk henderson says next week it will be the east forsyth eagles -triple -h has it covered

  2. Grimsley will beat any of the teams around here now. The Whirlies are on a roll and they could take out East Forsyth, Northwest, Ragsdale, Southeast, Southwest, Glenn, all of them. Grimsley is the team to beat now. We just took out East and we are taking on the all of the others too. Who’s next. You want some, come get some.

  3. hollywood henderson and the east forsyth eagles want some-triple-h says bring it on

  4. RAGSDALE is the team to beat. We have the best record and the best players. Which of the teams out there do think can really beat the RAGSDALE TIGERS? We have the best team in the state. We have the best players in the state. All of the other teams are looking up at RAGSDALE. We not only want some we are going to Take It All. RAGSDALE will not lose another game. I Guarantee it. Any takers. Curt Schilling will tell you, we have Blue Blood on our socks and RAGSDALE ROCKS. Any takers. How about it Southeast? That’s right you guys lost and RAGSDALE is the CHAMP. Coming up next: STATE CHAMPS 2007
