Atkins on the ball for CUBS

Northeast Guilford HS grad Mitch Atkins is on the ball for the Chicago Cubs High Class A farm team, the Daytona Cubs of the Florida State League.

Atkins is a right-handed pitcher with the Cubs and he is leading the team in several key categories. Someone was asking me the other day how is it going for Mitch, who graduated from NEG back in 2005. Here’s how it is going for the 21 year-old who is big and is putting up some big numbers to go with his size.

Mitch has a record of 7-6 for Daytona and that leads the team in wins and he also is the team leader in innings pitched with 100. Atkins has been in 17 games, all 17 starts with one complete game. Mitch has struck out 77 batters versus 25 walks issued. The current Atkins ERA stands at 2.88 for the 6’3, 230 pound kid from Northeast Guilford HS.

In his last outing back on Friday the 13th of July he got the win, going 7 innings with 0 runs, 4 hits, 8k’s, only one walk. The Cubs won the game 4-0, but Daytona stands at just 11-16 for the second half of the season.

As you can see Mitch Atkins has been a good investment for the Cubs and I hope we can see him move up to the AA Tennessee Smokies before the end of the year. Our numbers for this installment came from the Chicago Cubs web site through Major League Baseball.(go to www.mlb.com)
