The baseball legend of southeastern Guilford County, Charlie Pannell, called me on Thursday afternoon to pass on the news that Ben Areno of Southeast Guilford High School was headed to Longwood College up in Farmville, Virginia.
I saw something on this in the News and Record(www.news-record.com) but Charlie Pannell had the scoop and he let me know that the former SEG Falcon center fielder had earned himself a baseball scholarship to a Division I school and the people in Charlie’s neighborhood were very proud of Ben. Ben played this summer on Grady Lawson’s legion team out of Eastern Randolph county and now Ben is on his way to VA. Areno will now be a Longwood Lancer.
Ben had some problems finding the right school but now let’s hope that the road to Longwood is a straight one. Jim Modlin told me last week that former SEG Falcon football player Dustin Lineback is headed to East Carolina. Lineback was at Brevard College last season and now he will try to walk on at ECU. Justin Venable of SEG is also going to join the Pirates but Justin has one year of high school football left to play for SEG. The guys going to ECU will surely find the life interesting down in Greenville, N.C.
