Grimsley Whirlies get BIG road WIN Friday night at East Wake

special to Greensborosports.com by Fred Harris on the road with the Grimsley Whirlies

Andy,

Very entertaining game with lots of excitement for the first game of the season.

Even though the game included lots of penalties, dropped passes, fumbles, botched plays and even ejections the Whirlies prevailed 27-11 at the end.

1st Qtr-
East Wake opened the scoring with a 37 yd field goal at 5:51minutes left.
The Whirlies answered at 1:52 min. with a 32 yd run by QB Zack Maynard.

2nd Qtr-
Whirlies scored at about 4:43 min. on another QB keeper by Maynard.
East Wake right before halftime thew a long bomb and scored and converted on a two point conversion.

3rd Qtr-
The Whirlies returned to the “running game” that largely carried them to the playoffs the last couple of years primarily on the legs and power of David Moore. David had to go to the bench to work on some major cramps in his hamstring. Sophomore, David Ray came in and provided some spark at fullback and scored on a nice run of about 20 yds.

4th Qtr-
After a very emotional and “heated” 3 qtrs of football other running backs provided fresh legs and a worn out E. Wake defense allowed the Whirlies to take complete control of the game. LeSean “Lay-Lay” Brown scored on a 20 yd scamper.
As you recall he is only a freshman. When frustration ensued on the E. Wake defensive players, Whirlie QB Zack Maynard retaliated on a hard hit and push by a E. Wake player, and Zack was ejected. A few plays later another Whirlie DB Ramone Razollo was involved in another altercation and was also ejected. Back-up QB replaced Zack and worked the clock to perfection to end the game. The final score Grimsley 27 and E. Wake 11.

The six freshman including talented running back Eric Davidson did not see any action but they were in awe of the game and were very honored to dress out and travel with the varsity players their first year of high school football . The experience should help propel them to a win over over Nothern Durham next
Thursday at Grimsley stadium.

  1. It looks like Coach Sanders kids are out of control—does Coach Sanders have any control over these kids? They need to get there act together.

  2. If you don’t like Grimsley football you need to be ready. Grimsley is the team to beat now and they will be the team to beat for next several years. That’s all that the area coaches are talking about and Page needs to get ready for another butt whipping too. If you are tired of hearing about the Grimsley Whirlies then you should move, because this is THE TEAM. What else can anybody say? It’s Grimsley number one and everybody else fighting it out for second place. It’s great to be on top and looking down on the other schools.

  3. why is everybody trashtalking, let the kids play. We last year helped put the team in the media radar and tried to create a dynasty but unfortunetelly some younger players were not talkin care of business in the class after football season was over. Coach shuping stressed about class and making good grades and having charracter. Especially a QB acting out like that. Zack let his emotions get ahead of him, and i’m sure he learned from that and will not do it again. He is a mature player. We have alot of issues because our team is very young, and most of them don’t understand how much they are under the radar. I hope all goes well and me as well as my former teamates would love to see grimsley in the playoffs this year. Its hard to repeat the 12-0 run from last year, but i think we will still be dominant for 3 more years because those younger players will be amazing by their senior year

  4. Grimsley is 1-0 and they will be 2-0 after this week and then they will keep on rolling. As Christian said, Grimsley is not just a one time thing, this is a football program based upon what we’ve seen over the past several seasons and it will continue to thrive under Coach Saunders and Coach Anderson.

  5. I hope you cover them in the classroom as well as on the field—How about some more details on the grade cover up.
