Goldberg strikes Southern gold with Michael Vick comments

This is a Wild one from Whoopi:

NEW YORK – So much for the sedate alternative to Rosie O’Donnell on “The View.”

Whoopi Goldberg used her first day on the daytime chat show Tuesday to defend football star Michael Vick in his dogfighting case.

Goldberg said that “from where he comes from” in the South, dogfighting isn’t that unusual.

“It’s like cockfighting in Puerto Rico,” she said. “There are certain things that are indicative to certain parts of the country.”

The Atlanta Falcons quarterback pleaded guilty to federal dogfighting charges last week, admitting that he provided money for a dogfighting ring that operated on his Virginia property and helped kill six or eight pit bulls. Vick grew up in Newport News, Va.

Goldberg was selected by series creator Barbara Walters to replace O’Donnell, whose stormy tenure on the ABC program lasted less than a year.

In the Vick discussion, Goldberg served notice that she won’t shy away from controversy.

Co-host Joy Behar looked horrified at Goldberg.

“How about dog torture and dog murdering?” Behar asked.

For many people, dogs are sport, Goldberg replied, and it appeared it took awhile for Vick to realize that he was up against serious charges.

“I just thought it was interesting, because it seemed like a light went off in his head when he realized this was something that the entire country didn’t appreciate,” she said.

Vick has been suspended indefinitely by the National Football League and will be sentenced on the dogfighting charges in December. He apologized and asked for forgiveness upon entering his plea in federal court last week.

  1. Somehow, this really dosen’t surprise me. I’m at the point where I expect some people to defend others based entirely on race and not what is right.

  2. I think I’m from the South… Moonshine and Cockfighting, yes. Dogs are for hunting.

Honestly, I can not recall any organized dog fighting growing up in Reidsville – Illegal liquors houses, Saturday-night Night Specials, gambling houses (fancy and cheap).

The first Dog Fighting I had every heard of was when a former WFMY reporter ginned up a story at the station in the mid-west, where she had moved.

  3. Whoopi is just a ****** who does not realize that the South does not even have slaves anymore. The only thing she knows about is that in ROOTS there was cock fighting and she has had plenty of that….not the fighting. As a Southerner I totally resent her stupidity being directed at a group of states and people of whom she knows nothing..maybe she supports Vick because they are both trash, getto trash.

  4. Whoopi ain’t the stinging part of the whip, she’s just the crack.
She said Virginia is in the “Deep South” and probably in her world, it is “deep” in the South, farther than she’s ever been or even seen on tv.
Guess “Sister Act” and “Sister Act 2” (was she also in “Ghost” I can’t name many of her movies if they go past that) didn’t require her to travel past Richmond, and her New York education didn’t require any geography….

  5. Whoopi did not defend Vick. That is an unfair statement.

If she said there used to be slavery, would that be defending it?
