On Saturday, October 20th over 1,250 wrestlers from 34 states will converge on the Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center for the 8th Annual Super 32 Challenge wrestling tournament.

Tickets are on sale now and may be purchased at www.ticketmaster.com, via Ticketmaster’s Charge-By-Phone Network at 336-852-1100 in Greensboro and 336-722-6400 in Winston-Salem, at Ticketmaster retail ticket center locations including the FYE and Macy’s stores in Greensboro and at the Coliseum advance box office.

An event that began eight years ago in three gyms in Eden has grown to 20 mats at the Greensboro Coliseum and is regarded as one of top pre-season high school wrestling tournaments in the country. Over 90 State Champions from 27 states will be competing with other top wrestlers in the country.

Many of the nation’s top high school senior recruits will be featured in the tournament including Oklahoma State recruit Jordan Oliver at 125 who is ranked No. 7 in the country, Scott Winston, a Rutgers commitment who is ranked No. 2 at 160 and Jordan Blanton at 171 who is going to Iowa and is ranked No. 13. The event had attracted some of the nation’s top underclassmen as well as 29 individuals are ranked in the top 20 in their class and 42 earned All-American statuses at the Cadet and Junior Nationals this summer. Some of the top local wrestlers competing include Jacob Creed from Ragsdale at 125, Bobby Shanor (Morehead) and Bobby Watson (Forsyth Country Day) at 135 and Anthony Clinton from Davie County at 189.

The October 20th event will mark the third consecutive year the Super 32 Challenge will be held at the Special Events Center. Wrestling will begin at 8:00 a.m. and continue all day.

“We are excited about the growth of the Super 32 at the Special Events Center and in Greensboro”, said Marc Bush, President of the Greensboro Sports Commission. “This event is one of the premier pre-season wrestling tournaments in the country. The Super 32 and the Southern Scuffle hosted by UNC Greensboro in December have put Greensboro on the map as one of the prominent wrestling locations in the country and we hope to continue to grow upon that.”

  1. Sounds like a great showcase of young talent ( too bad much of it is from out of state). It is good to see that Greensboro, as well as the North C arolina are begining to embrace high school wrestling. N.C. will as be known for Basketball and football is KIng during the fall, no question. But wrestling usually seems to fall by the wayside during the winter season (which for most wrestling teams actually runs from Oct. to Mar). When I wrestled at Grimsley , attendance was dismal usaully consisting of just parents and siblings. It was also not uncommon for us to hold our “home” matches at Kiser MIddle School, where we also had to practice. Attendance at other city schools such as Page, Smith, and Dudley looked much the same. In N.C. ,wrestling is much more popular at the rural high schools. For Instance, I remeber NWG always having a strong home crowd as well as Ragsdale and East Forsyth all schools with strong programs. I guees my point is, high school wrestliing in NC will never catch up to other states unless it is taken more seriously. If you have ever been to a match, you know it can be very exciting, just like boxing but without the punching. Young people down here just aren’t educated about the sport. Most guys think that wrestling consists of two guys in tights rolling around on a mat trying to pin one another. Up North, and in the mid west wrestling matches are just as popoular as basketball games. I know this will probably never happen down here, but we still need to adequately fund our wrestling teams and give them the respect they deserve instead of always taking a backseat to basketball. Sorry for the rant.
