State-wide College football Top Ten:Wake Forest takes over the poll

We have had a small number of teams claim the top spot in this season’s College Football Poll and this week we have a new #1. Appalachian and Catawba have been at the top of the heap for most of the year but now we have a new dog at the front of the sled.

Wake Forest has had a great run during the past two campaigns at their Winston-Salem home base of operation and these Demon Deacons are for real. This is the Team to Beat. Right now the rest of our in-state teams can’t touch what the Deacons are a doing. How ’bout dem Deacons dogs?

On to the poll:
#1)Wake Forest(5-2) LW2-The Deacons hit it from jump street and jumped all over Navy 44-24 and have now won 5 in a row and they should have beaten Boston College and those no-good Nebraska Cornhuskers. Next up they have the Heels on Saturday.
#2)Elon(5-2) LW5-The Phoenix beat Wofford(the same Terrier bunch that beat Appalachian) at Spartanburg, S.C. and Elon is getting the job done with QB Scott Riddle out of nearby Eastern Randolph HS throwing for 343 yards and 3 TD’s on 41-51 passing with no interceptions for the Phoenix. Bo Williamson out of Burlington Cummings had 7 catches for 103 yards and punter Brandon Lane from Southeast Guilford punted 5 times for a 46.6 ypp average. Elon and the freshman quarterback Riddle are red-hot and smoking.
#3)North Carolina Central(5-2) LW7-Eagles move up a couple of spots after their 30-14 win over Savannah State while many of our previous penthouse members were going down.
#4)Winston-Salem State(4-3) LW NR-These boys are making some noise with a 14-9 victory at Bethune-Cookman. The Rams are back in the House.
#5)Appalachian State(5-2) LW4-Is ASU through? They lost again in the SoCon falling the hard way to Georgia Southern 38-35, but the game was in Boone. The Mountaineers don’t lose in Boone, do they? What is going on here?
#6)East Carolina(4-4) LW3-The down-East boys got run by the N.C. State Wolfpack and the people are saying to Skippy, don’t mess with your dad’s old team. Watch your step Holtz-man, the Pack is back and they’re talking smack, for at least 6 days.
#7)Catawba(7-1)LW1-The Indians take the biggest fall in the history of this poll after dropping their first game of the season 31-28 to Tusculum.
#8)Davidson(4-3) LW NR-These kids are very intelligent and we may need their help later and thus they are in the poll for the first time in 2007. Davidson pulled out a 24-21 win over Drake last week and this Saturday they face Butler.
#9)TIE Guilford(4-3) LW8 and UNC-Pembroke(3-5) LW9-The Quakers keep on losing and Saturday it was a 24-13 loss to Washington & Lee after leading 13-10 through three quarters. The Pembroke Braves lost 31-28 at Edward Waters and we’re just glad to see somebody still has some winning ways with Waters. We haven’t seen much of Waters around Guilford County recently.
#10)TIE N.C. State(2-5) LW NR, UNC-Chapel-Hill(2-5) LW10, and Greensboro College(2-5) LW NR-State got the much-needed 34-20 victory over ECU, North Carolina had the week off, and Greensboro College picked up one of the most important wins in school history with their 21-19 decision against Averett. GC had to win this one since Averett comes in at 0-7. If the Pride fell, then Coach Neal Mitchell’s job is gone. Our man Torrey Lowe scored two big Pride TD’s.
+++++Our Local Hot 5(although some are very cold)
1)Guilford(4-3)
2)Greensboro College(2-5)
3)UNCG Women’s Soccer(10-3-1/7-0 SoCon)
4)UNCG Men’s Soccer(6-7-2)
5)TIE:N.C. A&T(0-8) and the GTCC campus grounds crew(50 mad-men running around campus with no grass to mow)+++++
*****Did you see the College special on WFMY TV2 on Saturday evening? May Kay Beeler was the host and she took us to UNC-Pembroke, UNC-Wilmington, UNC-Charlotte, Salem College, Elizabeth City State, Guilford College, and many others. Very imformative and she was a lovely host.*****

  1. I had the pleasure of debating the partial qualifier requirements with some fans a few weeks ago and would like to apologize. It is quite obvious that Appalachian State does not have any non or partial qualifers on their team this year. They might want to find some or these athletes so they complete within their own conference in the future. One more loss and the Neers might be on the outside looking in come playoff time.

  2. I was told by some friends that Ms. Beeler was looking very attractive during this weekend’s College For A Weekend segment on TV 9. From what I hear it was Hot in Greensboro but very Chilly in Boone.

  3. I wish UNCW had a football team. There is alot of H.S. talent in south eastern N.C. On that note, UNCG should have a team as well. I know football programs can be very expensive to operate, but both of these schools should have a team.

  4. If NC Wesleyan and UNC-Pembroke can have teams; UNCW, UNCG, and UNC-Charlotte(now known as just Charlotte in some circles) all should have football teams and if Steve from the Doctor Steve O Show and the Jackass Hour heard that we had schools such as the above mentioned universities without football he would have a few choice names for the guys walking across those hallowed grounds and through the campus courtyards. Steve O would be calling those guys and the male unviersity officials Wussies, which is a word we can use here without offending anyone, at least I hope that is the case and if not we will take proper measures.

  5. On the scale of 1-10 I saw where one guy said May Kay was a 9 but on my scale she is still a 10. Appalachian Who?

  6. I went to High School with Scott Riddle of Eastern Randolph and that man is the real deal. The ACC schools missed out on him. He will be in the NFL one day.
