Heel’s Butch Davis headed to Arkansas?/Huskers are hustling

from Tom Dienhart of www.msnbc.msn.com comes some interesting water cooler talk for the cooler in the office or at practice:

The talk of Butch Davis leaving North Carolina after one year for Arkansas remains active. Davis doesn’t have an out regarding any team, but there is a buyout clause of $2 million.

If Davis bolts — again, likely a long shot — look for North Carolina to make a run at Navy’s Paul Johnson, a Tar Heel State native who was considered for the N.C. State job last year. He led Georgia Southern to consecutive I-AA titles before taking the Navy job prior to the 2002 season. Navy was 1-20 the two years before Johnson arrived. He entered 2007 with a 37-25 mark.

No doubt, Nebraska has to be poking around prospective coaching candidates with the future of Bill Callahan in peril.

I’m told that North Dakota State coach Craig Bohl may be a serious contender.

Bohl, 48, has done a fantastic job in five seasons with the Bison. And, maybe most importantly: Bohl is a Husker to the core. He is from Lincoln and played defensive back (1977-80) for interim A.D. Tom Osborne. He also coached eight seasons (1995-2002) at Nebraska, serving the last three as defensive coordinator.

  1. or not, I don’t know who the coach should be ( if Butch even leaves), but I’ve always thought there is no excuse why Carolina doesn’t have a top 25 team every year. I mean the stadium has always been regarded as one of the best in College football, plus UNC is usually ranked in the top five amomg all public Universities in the nation based on academics and programs offered. In other words they have recruiting leverage, but it seems that they just care about basketball. If UNC made atrue commitment to strengthen their football program, I’m sure it could happen. I mean at least a team that goes .500 or better. Same for NC State. Their is football talent in this state, but it seems that it all goes to out of state schools (SEC). Just my opinion. I’m an FSU fan.

How many 4 and 5 star high school athletes care about a school’s academic standing. Very few, I bet.

  3. Well, it looks like BD has already signed a contract with Arkansas which includes the $2 million payout to UNC. He’s gone the day after UNC’s last game at Duke.

On the other hand, how many 4 and 5 star high school athletes are even able to read and write? Very few I’m sure.

  5. Guys, don’t get so carried away. Butch has Arkansas ties, but they aren’t that strong. He’s an Ok. boy who played with the Hogs for a brief time. He wants to dominate,. Let’s face it, he can achieve this goal quicker in the weak ACC Atlantic than he can in the SEC. Finally, there is evidence that Arkansas has even spoken to Davis. When UNC spoke to R. Williams (1st time) it was all over the news. Nothing in this case supports that.

  6. Butch is not and OK boy as ApexDan stated. He is from Springdale, Arkansas and his father still lives there. Springdale shares a border with Fayetteville. He was not a particularly great player for the Hogs, so he doesn’t have a legacy to put at risk should he fail as the coach. Arkansas is the perfect place to be for a coach who wants to be a hero. The talent is there. The history is there. The money is there. The facilities are there. All the Hogs need is a good coach.
