Petty Enterprises is moving to Mooresville from Level Cross. There’s probably a ton of Racin’ Coverage to explain the advantages to Petty Racing to be nearer to the engine builders, body shops, etc. No need to repeat that here.
Level Cross is where most of the local television stations have their transmitter facilities. In my previous career in television engineering, I spent quite a bit of time in Level Cross. In the early days of WFMY, when they first built their new tower back in 1980 and then in 1999 to 2007 at WTWB.
It was always fun to grab lunch in Randleman because eventually you see staff from Petty Enterprises taking their lunch as well. These were just plain old folks, making a living and wearing a really cool uniform. It was quite a site to behold. I’m going to miss those days.
Those guys who decide to move with the Petty Shop will miss those days too! They stood out. In Mooresville, they will be one of many teams. NASCAR Teams are everywhere in Mooresville. You can’t go far between seeing a shop uniform. It’s not as special for the folks in Mooresville either, just another car business.
But you got to do what you go to do to stay competitive. There’s no doubt that in Mooreseville, Petty Enterprises will have access to better equipment and information than they had working by themselves in Level Cross. They will be missed. We’ll still have the Petty Museum and the Randleman Fan Fest (I hope!).
