Greensboro Colleges Goes Hi-Tech with IPTV Games

Greensboro College will begin producing live streaming audio and video of Pride athletic events.

PrideTV debuts on Tuesday when GC women’s basketball hosts Emory & Henry College. The following day, Guilford College visits The Pride men.

Fans with an Internet connection can view the broadcasts at: http://www.ustream.tv/gcpride

There is no charge to view the games and broadcasts are archived.

“We are excited about showcasing our teams on PrideTV,” said Bob Lowe, Greensboro College’s sports information director. “We have been pioneers in the field of Internet streaming and this application is just what we were looking for.”

In 1999 Greensboro College began self-hosting audio webcasts of Pride games. Since then, GC has produced numerous broadcasts on its site and through Stretch Internet. The Pride can offer audio webcasts via Ustream, too, which will be done under the PrideNet moniker.

The USA South Athletic Conference recently mandated that host institutions produce video webcasts for most of its championship games. The most recent soccer, volleyball and basketball championships were successfully broadcast by conference members.

“We did a handful of video webcasts years ago but the cost was high and the technology was not there,” Lowe said. “With today’s technology, we were able to find a free service in Ustream.tv.”

PrideTV will begin with basketball and is ideally suited for games Hanes Gym due to the availability of hard-wired Internet access.

“With the campus recently fully wired for wi-fi we hope to offer live stats for future games at Pride Field,” said Lowe. “We look forward to offering these value-added features for our student athletes and fans.”

Games available on PrideTV and/or live stats will be listed on the scoreboard page on game days, and included in appropriate campus email alerts.

(Thanks to News & Record for this post info – curses to us for not getting on the Greensboro College SID’s distribution list.)

Don’s NOTE – USTREAM.TV is a free service and anybody can broadcast their event via USTREAM or one of the other FREE Internet Television Services. All it requires is a good-quality high speed Internet connection – UPLOAD speed needs to be 300Kb or better – and a camera. You can get “FANCY” with multi-cameras and added production value with some extra equipment. If you are interested in knowing more. Let me know.
