Busy weekend for local sports

Dudley(12-3) is playing Charlotte Catholic tomorrow afternoon at 3:30pm in the State 3-AA football championship game in Chapel-Hill. You can hear the game on AM950 radio with the pre-game set for 3pm and again the kickoff will coming up at 3:30.

We like Dudley’s chances and they say the third time is the charm and this will be the Panthers third title game appearance in the past six years. Dudley has good leadership on the field in QB Ricky Lewis Jr. and on the sidelines with head coach Steven Davis.

We know that Lewis, Kyree Ward and Joseph Jackson can all run the ball and if the Panthers need to throw some passes then Kenny Okoro, Tory Warren, Julian Alford, and Doug Sigmon will all be waiting with open arms. Watch for Okoro, Warren, and Alford long and Sigmon should be open out in the right flat.

We hope that Dudley is not forced to go to the air unless they want to and everyone knows that the Dudley Defense is the real key to victory. Dudley’s “D” is what keeps them in every game. It starts up front with Chris Neal, Josh Jones, Kelton Shepherd, and Sigmon and Major Bryant, Justin King, and Jermaine Moore man mid-field and then Okoro, Warren and Alford pick up the slack in the back.

Dudley is the team to beat, and we like it at 12-7 Panthers, although I wish Dudley could go in and win it by two or three TD’s.

Also on the scoreboard we like (13-2) Independence past New Bern(13-2) in the 4-AA game, plus (14-0) Wilmington Hoggard tops Mount Tabor(12-3) in the 4-A contest, then it’s (15-0) Western Alamance getting coach Hal Capps a crown in the 3-A’s with a win over North Gaston(12-2). In the 2-AA matchup we have Reidsville(15-0) winning again this time over (14-1) Shelby.

That’s if for us on the football game calls because we don’t have enough background on the other clubs to make the educated choices that we need to make. Guessing has been getting me in trouble lately.

Grimsley took two from North Davidson last night in hoops at the Bob Sawyer Gym and the Whirlie girls are (5-0) and the boys rest at (4-1). Tonight Page-grad John Isner takes on Mardy Fish in an indoor tennis match at the Greensboro Coliseum while the Page Pirates will host their biggest basketball doubleheader of the year with Ragsdale coming to the MAC. The Tiger and Pirates boys teams are both unbeaten.

Elsewhere this evening in HS hoops it’s Smith at Dudley, NWG at WG, SWG at SEG, Northern vs. Eastern Guilford at UNCG, HP Central at Eastern Randolph, Lexington at HP Andrews, and Trinity at Southern Guilford.

It’s a busy weekend for local sports and also tonight the Appalachian State Moutaineers will be hosting the Richmond Spiders in round three of the playoffs up in Boone with kickoff scheduled for 8pm and ESPN2 due to be on hand for the complete coverage.

This just in….Also tonight it’s Ravenscroft at Greensboro Day in HS basketball. Ravenscroft is supposed to have one of the best boys teams in the state and will give the Bengals a huge challenge. Ravenscroft has some front line players that everybody is after. Carolina will have scouts at the game, Johnny Dawkins from Duke is on his way, and John Beilein, formerly of West Virginia and now the head coach at Michigan is flying in just for this game.(Michigan will also be at Duke for Wolverines/Blue Devils hoops on Saturday) It’s going to be a big one out on Lawndale Drive just down below Mahi’s Seafood Grille at the Greensboro Day School.
