Page Pirates fall:Boys no longer unbeaten

The Northeast Guilford Rams made out like a thief in the night and came to the Mac Morris Gym and stole one from the Page Pirates on Tuesday evening. NEG over Page 71-67 as Robert Kent’s boys lost for the first time this season.

Page was up 32-25 at the half and then increased their lead over NEG to 51-43 after 3 quarters. Up by 7 at halftime and then the spread grows to eight after three stanzas but here comes the final frame and NEG goes on a tear.

NEG out-scored Page 28-16 in the last period to win it by four points at 71-67 and NEG improves to (4-2) on the year and Page falls to (6-1). Page finished this game much like they did against WS Reynolds where they lead all the way but let the visiting team back in it at the end. Page held on and beat Reyonlds in OT but last night there was no overtime to be found as the Pirates made bad passes and turned the ball over too many times during the stretch run.

Julius Brooks got into foul trouble again for Page and he sat down early in the 4th quarter and did not return until there was just 2:29 left in the contest. Coach Kent had him at the scorer’s table and tried to get him in earlier but they couldn’t get a stoppage of play and I believe they finally had call a timeout to get him back in the game.

Page is no longer unbeaten and they have another strong opponent coming to the Mac on Thursday night in the likes of HP Andrews. If we study the landscape closely, I believe we only have two unbeaten teams left in the county, in Dudley(3-0) and Northern Guilford(5-0). Dudley has a very tough Southern Lee team coming into the Panther’s gym on Thursday while Northern takes off to New York to face Christ the King.

In Tuesday’s game with Page and NEG, the Rams’ coach Curtis Hunter got great production from Tee Cleveland, Jamal Rasool, and Darius White in the second half. Seth Hawkins, who was at Page, went to Smith, and now has settled in at NEG for his senior season, had another big night. Sixteen points a-piece for Hawkins and Rasool, TC had 15, White 10, and Markee Brown chipped in 7.

Page was led by Jordan Weethe’s 14, while Luqman Tijani and John Spain each had 10. Julius Brooks was saddled with the foul trouble and ended up with 9 points, 10 rebounds, and four blocked-shots.

The Page girls helped the Pirates get a split with NEG after their 36-30 victory over the Rams. Jasmine Gill, who they list as a center, but she plays like a forward that probably will fit in better in the long run as a two guard in college, had 18 big points and 10 boards for the Lady Pirates. We got to see the all-time low-to-the-floor one-on-one match-up at point guard with Nini Whitaker of Page going at it with Shelly Reese of NEG.

In other Tuesdy night action, the Grimsley girls(8-0) got a huge road win over Bishop McGuinness, 58-51, in Kernersville. Trumae Lucas led the Whirlies with 16 as Grimsley snapped McGuinness’ 29-game winning streak. The Grimsley boys ran past BM 65-44. Western Guilford edged Smith 66-63 in the boys game, but Smith won the girls opener 47-41.

Ragsdale grabbed two wins from SWG, 51-44 girls and the Tiger boys were winners, 83-40 over Southwest. Ragsdale was up 41-15 at halftime of the boys game and Jay Canty led the Tigers for the game with 22 points while Wally Jones had 17 and Ladarious Canty added 10. The NWG girls have run their record to (9-0) after last night’s 71-54 victory over Mt. Tabor and the HP Andrews boys are now (5-1) as they knocked off Reidsville 49-42 Tuesday evening.

We saw several local coaches at the Page-NEG game with Freddy Johnson, Steve Shelton, and Jeff Smith of Greensboro Day looking on along with Johnny Smith of Northern Guilford and Milton Jenkins of Eastern Guilford.

  1. Who are these coaches you mentioned? They are a bunch of no-names. Who ever heard of any of these guys? A bunch of no-names.

High Point Andrews is for losers. They are losers. A terrible program.

  2. All of the coaches we mentioned are respected members of our community and they work hard to help the kids. They all do an outstanding job are to be commended and not bashed. High Point Andrews has only lost one game how can you crack on them with a record like that? James Abell had done a fine job with the Red Raiders and they have a good program as far as I can tell. What do others have to say?
