N.C. State Great Tab Thacker goes down for the count

Former Wolfpack wrestler Tab Thacker has died at the age of 45 in Raleigh. Thacker was an NCAA heavyweight champion and four-time ACC champ. He had suffered from poor health in recent years and had lost both of his legs within the past few months due to complications from severe diabetes.

Big Tab weighed upwards of 400 pounds while he was wrestling and he was the NCHSAA champ attending West Forsyth High School and he won the NCAA title as a Wolfpack grappler back in 1984. Thacker had a record of 31-0 as a college senior and his overall collegiate mark stood at 92-11-1.

Some of you may remember Tab Thacker from his appearances in the Police Academy movies along side Bubba Smith. He also had some bit parts as an extra in a few other flicks.

In a far side note off of the subject of death, Ric Flair is set to make his last EVER appearance tonight at the GREENSBORO COLISEUM as a professional wrestler. The WWE will be taping their Monday Night Raw show for a Monday, New Years Eve, playback on the USA Network.

  1. I’m sorry to hear about Thacker. Being that large can definitely have a downside to your health.

No, Andy, I didn’t take a camera with me. I was hoping you were getting me one for Christmas. Ric Flair wrestled his first match in the Greensboro Coliseum on May 16th, 1974 (Danny Miller & Abe Jacobs vs. Ricky Flair & Chuck O’Connor), which I believe is the same day you turned thirty. Maybe this report from last night will do:

Special thanks to Diamond Dan Grondy for keeping me from getting kicked out of the Coliseum before the show started.
