Legendary high school football coach Herman Boone, on whose story the 2000 Disney film Remember the Titans was based, will speak at Guilford on Tuesday, Jan. 29, at 7 p.m. in Sternberger Auditorium.
Guilford’s Africana Community, Multicultural Education Department and Athletics Department are co-sponsoring Boone’s talk as part of the campus’s observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Boone, a native of Rocky Mount, N.C., and a graduate of N.C. Central University, was hired to coach football at the newly integrated T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria, Va., in 1971. Boone’s Titans overcame intense racial prejudice to score an undefeated record and that year’s state championship.
The lecture is free and open to the public. For more information, call 336-316-2473.
