Dudley comes back and holds off Nighthawks:No upset this time…

The Dudley Panthers were named the Number One 3-A team in the state this week and last night at the new Northern Guilford gym the Dudley boys almost saw it all come crashing down. There was no upset this time but keep an eye on this new-found rivalry in basketball. You may see these teams meet again for a 3rd time in the finals of the Triad 3-A conference tournament coming up in two weeks at NEG.

You have to say and I was thinking it last night, “the Dudley boys are a tough nut to crack”. This is a hard team to beat. Only Oak Hill and Greensboro Day have been able to do it this year. Northern had it’s chances and especially with the game at NG and the fans from both schools yelling over-rated back and forth across the gym this was a HOT one. With the outside temperatures soaring for winter numbers, the new NG gym was toasty to say the least.

Northern got hot early and led 10-9 after one quarter. Dudley fought back to make it 28-25 Panthers at the half. At the end of three quarters NG was back in front 43-39. It was time for Dudley to make some key steals and hit their free throws and that’s what the Panthers did. Guard Marcus Heath went 6-6 down the stretch, Brandon Pennix(54.8% at the line coming into the game) hit his foul shots, and when Mike Coger banked one in from the line and called bank before it left his hands, you just new that Dudley was into one of their classic end of the game finishes.

The Panthers out-scored the Nighthawks 28-19 in the fourth quarter to win the game over NG 67-62. Mike Coger had 14 for Dudley, while PJ Hairston had 12pts/10 boards, Marcus Heath had 11 points, Brandon Pennix had 10pts./8 rebounds, and the quick ball-stealing guard Brennan Wyatt had 8pts. and so did Ricky Smith. For Northern, Michael Neal had 19, Jonathan Frye 14, Jacob Lawson had 11 and fouled out again, and long-range shooter Dylan Berry had 10 points.

Northern is now (8-3) in the conference and so is Northeast but NG has beaten NEG twice. Dudley remains unbeaten in the Triad 3-A. Northern didn’t get Dudley this time, but tickets went on sale right after the game for the re-match at NEG in the conference finals, but don’t tell NEG because they will want to have a say about of all of this too.

The Dudley girls were victorious over NG for the second time this season in last night’s action and the Dudley JV’s won out over Northen 104-47. We should have pictures and video from the game up on the site later today and we thank Coach K for the tour of the new Northern Guilford facilities.

Also last night there was an upset as the High Point Central girls topped NWG 59-51 to drop the Vikings to (4-3) in the Metro 4-A. There was almost another upset with the Grimlsey boys just getting past East Forsyth 38-36 on a game-winning 3-pointer by the Whirlies’ Carter Gourley. The Grimsley girls had no problems dropping EF 59-23 to stay unbeaten. In their pursuit of NG, the NEG boys left Morehead in the parking lot with the Rams rolling 65-52 and the Lady Rams defeated Morehead 56-35. The Page Pirates were winners over Smith in the girls contest 44-32, the SEG girls won again 75-37 against SW Randolph, Eastern Guilford’s girls got another win 41-33 over McMichael and Ragsdale ripped Randleman 65-23 in girls action while the Ragsdale boys were blasting Randleman 95-53.

The Ragsdale boys now have a deeper lineup with this TJ Motley kid taking over with all kinds of help coming from Ladarious Canty, Wally Jones, Jay Canty, Tyquan Roberts, and Josh White. Over in High Point last night HP Wesleyan crushed Gospel Light 58-26 and WS Parkland caught SWG napping in girls action, Cowgirls go down, 65-52. In other boys games, Eastern took care of McMichael 78-65 while WG tagged Rockingham County 57-48 to break a three-game losing streak and then it was SW Randolph by 20 over SEG, 67-47.
*****I did some checking around and was able to get another score that our readers were asking about. Page 82, Smith 67(boys)…..*****

  1. Good question. I couldn’t find a score on them but we will keep looking since we wondering the same thing you are. Did the Page boys win?

  2. Andy, I just wanted to say that you we’re right….you stated early in the season that Northern and Dudley would be the teams to beat in that conference. I remember saying to myself, “he’s crazy” Northeast will have something to say about that. BUT you we’re right and I STILL hope that I am right ……that Northeast will have a say before it’s all said and done. calvin
