The Greensboro Day School Bengals were without their main big man and leading scorer Javan Mitchell on Friday evening but they still rolled over Forsyth Country Day 67-51. The Bengals jumped on the Furies early and never had any problems putting FCD away. GDS got great initial production from Bruce Woodall, Jay Lewis, and the freshman, tall and lanky Jordan Robertson. Robertson was playing in the middle for the missing Mitchell and the young JR was waving his hands and encouraging the home crowd in the Dillard Gym to get up and get rowdy even before he entered the center circle for the opening tip.
Robertson supported his enthusiasm with 11 big points to back up Woodall with 16 and Lewis with 12. Ryan Carty added 11 to aid the Bengal cause. After and early tie had the game at 7-7, FCD was never really in this thing. Strong defense by the Bengals forced numerous Fury turnovers and the Bengals improved to (25-3) with the win. The Bengals will stay busy with Charlotte Country Day coming to town on Monday, Calvary Baptist heads over to GDS on Tuesday, and High Point Wesleyan led by Josh Coble and James Robbins will be at the DAC(Dillard Athletic Center) on Thursday.
Coach Freddy Johnson of the GDS Bengals becomes more and more like Morgan Wooten of DeMatha HS out of Hyattsville, Maryland with each passing game and each additional victory. With over 700 wins under his belt and 800 fast approaching, Freddy is defintely in the Wooten neighborhood. Wooten was 1,274-192 in his career that ran from 1956 until 2000 at DeMatha. It’s sort of crazy when a coach becomes bigger than his team but the legend of Freddy Johnson will live on long after the hundreds of players have moved on down the road.
Javan Mitchell is due back in town at the first of the week and will be avaiable for the busy upcoming marathon of games. Mitchell had to go down to Louisiana to attend his grandmother’s funeral.
Elsewhere on Friday the Northeast Guilford girls did not quit and they haven’t stopped since their coach Wayne Stevens accused them of giving up last time when the Rams lost at Dudley. NEG has not lost since that earlier meeting with Dudley and last night it was the Rams in a mild upset win over the Panthers 64-56. Both girls teams are now tied at (11-1) in the conference. The Dudley boys handled NEG 81-74 with PJ Hairston hitting for 21, Brandon Pennix 17 and Marcus Heath 13, while Seth Hawkins had 36 for NEG. Dudley boys now (12-0) conference and NEG stands at (8-4) but Northern takes over sole possesion of second place after their 70-56 win over Rockingham County. Berry had 18 and Frye 17 for the (9-3) Nighthawks in Triad 3-A competition and NG sits at (15-7) overall.
The Grimsley boys and girls earned a sweep over Page with both games very tight, Whirlie girls win 54-49 to go (22-0/8-0) and Grimsley’s boys hold on to win 66-63 to move to (18-3/8-0). Both Grimsley teams have clinched the Metro conference titles. Amber Cook and Kristin Fields led the Whirlie girls while Christian Tonkins, Keith Manley, and JB Beloved paced the Grimsley guys. The Whirlie girls and Grimsley guys, not too shabby for catch-phrases.
The High Point Central girls continued their late-season surge under coach Kenny Carter as they topped Smith 73-61 to improve to (10-11/4-4). The Ragsdale boys and girls both won again easily, but what else is new? Tiger boys(20-3/10-1) dominate SW Randolph 80-65 with Wally Jones going for 18 and the Tiger girls(19-3/10-1) roar 71-51 over SWR with Courtney Arrington nailing 20 points. Eastern Guilford had success at West Stokes for the EG girls(17-5/8-1) as they won 56-51 but the boys lost 59-57. The EG Wildcat girls were on the WXII TV 12 HS basketball highlights show with Dave Goren last night.
Western Guilford gained a split with Western Alamance with the Hornet boys winning 59-39 but the WG girls lose 55-37. The Northwest Guilford boys out-scored East Forsyth 21-7 in the second quarter but EF out-scored NEG 29-15 in the fourth and EF topped NWG 62-59. In other boys action HP Andrews stopped WS Carver 50-38 and WS Prep rocked HP Wesleyan 74-50. James Robbins had 20 and Josh Coble 16 for HPW. In three other girls games, SWG(12-10/7-1) found the win column again with a 50-34 win against WS Reagan, the HPW girls rocked and rolled WS Prep 51-18 and finally says Bob Caudle, it was the rock n roll express from Rockingham County taking out the Northern Guilford girls 53-33 with Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson in the Cougars corner.(Be careful girls and parents of the players)
No results on the NWG-EF girls and no news on Southen Guilford. From what our studies tell us SEG had the night off.
This just in:NWG girls 45-42 over East Forsyth, High Point Central beat Smth in the boys game on a last second shot 50-49 and HPC boys are (4-17) overall. The SWG boys lost to WS Reagan 72-70, SWG boys now (3-19). The HP Andrews girls defeated WS Carver 42-32. From earlier talk, Forsyth Country Day girls ran past GDS 56-24.
