Guilford College Athletics Update

Guilford’s men’s basketball team defeated Bridgewater Saturday, 77-69, behind 25 points and seven rebounds by Ben Strong. Clay Henson added 18 for the Quakers and Tyler Sanborn added his fourth double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. The Quakers’ women’s basketball team dropped a 70-56 home decision to Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC)-rival Roanoke Saturday afternoon. Ann Seufer paced three Quakers in double-digit scoring with a game-high 19 points. Guilford’s softball team opened the 2008 season with a home sweep of visiting Peace College Saturday. Kelly Guarnieri went three-for-three with four runs batted in in the 8-4 opening victory. Her three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning ended the game and made a winner out of starting pitcher DeNina Eldridge. Samantha Golley twirled a complete-game one-hitter in the Quakers’ 8-0, six-inning victory in the nightcap. Kelly Hale homered for the hosts and Amber Stapler had three hits. Joe John’s walk-off, three-run homer in the home seventh salvaged a split of the baseball team’s doubleheader with Southern Virginia Saturday. John’s blast made a winner of starter Ryan Hairston, who picked up his first Guilford win with a complete-game five-hitter. The Quakers dropped the opener, 8-4. Guilford’s women’s swimming team sits in the middle of the 11-team pack after two of three days of the Atlantic States/ODAC Championships in Radford, Va. Two more school records fell in Saturday’s action as Justine Merritt set her second mark in as many days with an 11th-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley. The Quakers’ 400 medley relay team also set a new standard with its sixth-place finish. Merritt’s school-record setting time in the 100 breaststroke placed ninth in the race and helped Guilford to sixth place among 11 teams after Friday’s opening day of swimming competition.
