UNCG at Davidson…7:02 on ESPN 2

UNCG (14-10, 8-7) at Davidson (19-6, 17-0), 7:02 pm

TV: ESPN2 (Bob Wischusen and Doug Gottlieb on the call)
Radio: WPET-AM 950)

UNCG snapped a four-game losing skid on Saturday by downing Appalachian State, 79-55. Ben Stywall and Kyle Hines provided a 1-2 punch of sorts in the win. Stywall had 14 of his 15 points in the first 20:12 while Hines had 19 of his 26 in the final6 19:48.

• Davidson has won 11 of the last 12 meetings with the Spartans. However, UNCG’s win in the 2005 Southern Conference Tournament snapped Davidson’s 16-game winning streak (the longest in the nation at the time). The Wildcats overcame a 20-point first half deficit to beat the Spartans, 83-78, in last week’s meeting in Greensboro. UNCG led 60-43 with 17 minutes left, but a 24-5 run by the Wildcats turned that into a 67-65 Davidson advantage as UNCG had just one FG over an eight-minute span.

• Kyle Hines now has 2,060 career points. To date, 440 players have ever scored 2,000 points in a career. Hines is the sixth player to achieve the milestone this year. He broke the school’s all-time scoring record held by Jay Joseph (1,646) in the loss at Missouri State. At Georgia Southern, Hines broke the Southern Conference’s all-time record for blocked shots. He now sits at 326 for his career. At The Citadel, he broke Bruce Shaw’s school record career rebounds (933, 1968-73). Hines begins play tonight at 993 career rebounds. needing just seven rebounds for the elite club of 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds – a combination that just 95 players in all of Division I NCAA history have ever achieved. Only five of those players have also had 300 blocked shots.(info from Spartan web site)

*****This will be a huge game for the Spartans and for that matter it will be an extra large game for Davidson. With the national audience looking in all eyes will be on Kyle Hines and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. After that 79-55 win over App State in Fleming Gym on Saturday afternoon, this game and a win over Davidson, could be the turning point in a very important season for the Spartans.

In turn this could become the biggest win to date in the history of the men’s basketball program at UNCG. There may be one obstacle that may prove too big to tackle at Davidson. John Kilgo will have the radio play-by-play call for the Wildcats, and you have to look out or the Spartans may get Kilgoed. That would be unfortunate. *****

  1. That game was really no contest. Davidson had the upper hand all game.

UConn 65, Depaul 60. The hottest team in the nation brings it win streak to 10! Go Huskies!

  2. The big game is set for Saturday with #1 unbeaten Memphis and #2 Tennessee. Biggest game ever in the state of Tennessee for men’s basketball.
