High School basketball Saturday morning rewind

It was a busy night for high school hoops on Friday and there will still be more games and titles to be settled on this Saturday February 23.

The Greensboro Day School boys defeated Charlotte Christian 56-46 in the NCISSA 3-A state semifinals with Bruce Woodall hitting for 15 points and Seth Curry led Charlotte with 17. GDS will play the #1 seeded Christ School today for the championship at noon in Raleigh. The Dudley Panther boys claimed another Triad 3-A conference title last night by beating Northeast Guilford 60-57. Dudley was led by freshman PJ Hairston with 19 and Seth Hawkins had 24 for NEG. Brandon Pennix had 10 points and 10 boards for the Panthers. The NEG girls won their third straight Triad 3-A conference title rolling over Rockingham County 58-32 with Deandre Murray, Jackie Lyles, and Shelley Reese all having big games for the Rams.

The Ragsdale girls topped Southeast Guilford 51-40 with Meghan Ingram’s 20 points and key free throws making the difference for the Tigers. Lisa Archie had a solid game inside for Ragsdale. This was the second straight conference title for the Tigers. Amy Beasley had 13 for the Falcons and Jazz Gibbs had 12 points. The Eastern Guilford girls could not overcome the number one seeded Reidsville Rams as the Wildcats fell 75-73 in the North State 2-A title tilt. Amirah Jamison had 22, Lashonda Anderson 17, Miranda Jenkins 15, and Kristin Crosby 12 for the ‘Cats. The High Point Wesleyan girls’ season came to end as the Trojans lost in the state NCISSA playoffs to Providence Day out of Charlotte 44-36.

The High Andrews boys knocked off WS Reagan 50-45 and now the Red Raiders will meet Glenn for the Piedmont Triad 3-A title tonight at 7:30 at Andrews. The Andrews girls will face Glenn for the championship at 6pm in the HPA gym.

The Metro 4-A fnals are set for this afternoon at Grimsley’s Bob Sawyer Gymnasium. It will be an all Page-Grimsley final. Last night the Lady Pirates hit some key free throws down the stretch and they missed a few that could have iced the game but Nini Whitaker, Jasmine Gill, and Bijon Fonville all stepped up and the Pirates held off a strong High Point Central effort to defeat the Black Bison 56-53. Fonville hit some big three-point shots early and Gill made some important free throws in the 4th quarter. Whitaker played a very physical game defensively and she handled the ball out front on offense.

The Whirlie girls from Grimsley trailed Northwest 4-3 and then they went on a run and never looked back topping the Vikings 61-34. All of the Grimsley girls played and coach Phil Weaver was able to rest his starters in the fourth quarter. Trumae Lucas led Grimsley with 22 and Kristen Fields had 13. Grimsley led 27-10 at halftime and 46-19 after three quarters. Three of the four Page losses this season have come at the hands of Grimsley.

Today’s girl’s finals will get under way at 1pm with Grimsley(25-0) facing Page(20-4), and then the boys will have Page(15-11) meeting Grimsley(21-3) at 3pm. We will have coverage for you on AM950 WPET radio beginning at 2:30. The NWG girls will take on HPC at 11am in a sectional seeding game. Last night the Eastern Guilford boys beat West Stokes 74-46 in one of those sectional seeding games.

  1. There was a smackdown yesterday over at Sawyer Gym. McIntyre played outstanding and Weethe hit some big 3’s as the Pirates went up by 25 at the half. The 2/3 zone shut the Whirlies down inside and they could not buy a basket from the outsidet. Didnt see Jonathon Leonard in the lineup for Grimsley and I’m sure that hurt some but the Pirates were relentless on the break. Page has got a ton of talent so I’m suprised that thier record is only 15-11.
