Guilford College Men’s Lacrosse – Washington and Jefferson 7, Guilford 5

WASHINGTON, Pa. (3-12-08) — Junior midfielder James Lavery’s (Moreland Hills, Ohio/University) man-down goal with 7:41 left in regulation helped Washington & Jefferson defeat Guilford (N.C.), 7-5, in men’s lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon at Alexandre Stadium.

The win was the first for the Presidents (1-2) this season and the program’s first against an opponent from the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC).

W&J dominated the first period, racing out to a 3-0 lead. Junior attacker Zach Devilbiss (Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key) scored the first goal 1:45 into the game and senior attacker Tim Huckestein (Allison Park. Pa./North Allegheny) followed with a goal seven minutes later for a 2-0 advantage. Sophomore midfielder Jackson Doyle (Northville, Mich./Northville) netted his first goal of the season at the 3:48 mark to end the first-quarter scoring.

Both teams scored one goal in the second quarter and Devilbiss made it a 5-1 W&J lead with a goal three minutes into the second half.

The Quakers (2-4) then staged a furious rally with four goals during a five-minute stretch to tie the game. Freshman midfielder Joe Dauksis (North Kingstown, R.I./North Kingstown) tied the game, 5-5, with 1:56 remaining in the third quarter.

The teams went without a goal for the next 10 minutes, but Lavery raced down the field and scored the eventual game winner midway through the final quarter. Huckestein added an insurance goal off a pass from senior midfielder John Foran (Annandale, N.J./Rutgers Prep) with 2:56 left.

Devilbiss, Huckestein and Doyle all netted two goals for the Presidents, who held a 38-35 shot advantage. The Presidents also used a 40-34 edge in ground balls. Freshman goaltender Quinton Thorne (Pittsburgh, Pa./Winchester Thurston) earned his first career victory after making 13 saves.

Guilford had five different players score one goal. Senior goalie Andrew Vigne (Concord, Mass./Middlesex) kept the Quakers in the game by collecting 20 saves. GC was held without a goal on six extra-man opportunities.

Washington & Jefferson hits the road for spring break on Saturday when it travels to Adrian (Mich.) for a 1:00 pm contest. The Presidents and Bulldogs have never met in men’s lacrosse.
