Some of the best things in life are free

We live in a world where you can watch pretty much any game of interest, regardless of where you live. Whether you love the Seattle Mariners, the San Jose Sharks or the Denver Nuggets, you are never cut off from seeing them play.

Never, of course, if you’re willing to pay. Leagues rake in millions each year in subscriber fees from the various pay-per-view services such as MLB Extra Innings and NFL Sunday Ticket. The last couple of years have seen online counterparts to these services, like MLB.TV, where you can watch games from your computer for a price.

There is one major event that is still bucking that trend – the Men’s NCAA Basketball Tournament. Although they do sell a March Madness package through DirecTV for $69, WFMY has once again made all the games available over it’s digital channels.

For the price of an antenna, you can watch the regional action not shown on the main WFMY channel on 2-3 and 2-4. On Time Warner Digital Cable, it’s 523 and 524.

The only negative is that these additional feeds are not in HD, but that’s a small price to pay to see games that would otherwise not be available.

It will be interesting to see how long the NCAA will allow local stations and cbsportsline.com (which allows users to watch games on its website free of charge) to simply give these games away. You can bet it will be discussed when the NCAA contract with CBS expires in 2014.

But for now we can just sit back and enjoy the entire spectacle that is the NCAA Tournament without having to dig into our pockets.

  1. Friday, I have the day off of work. I have the potential to watch three games at once (picture in Picture on TV, and the Internet)

And Guilford County Schools are IN session, so it’ll be nice and quiet.

    Life Is Good!
