Greensboro, N.C. –Guilford College’s men’s golf team remained in seventh place in the third Division III Golf World/Nike Golf Coaches’ Poll of the spring season released today. Methodist University retained sole possession of first place after receiving 13-of-14 first-place votes. Huntington College leapfrogged one spot for the second consecutive poll, into second place, 37 points behind Methodist. Oglethorpe University, which had second place in the previous poll, slipped to fourth place, 11 points behind Gustavus Adolphus College. The University of LaVerne, winners of three spring events, jumped eight spots into eighth place. Illinois Wesleyan University gained two spots, jumping ahead of Guilford.
Methodist defeated coach Jack Jensen’s Quakers last week in the Marine Federal Credit Union Intercollegiate Mar. 28-30 for its fourth win of the spring. Guilford has seven top-10 finishes in eight events this year, including a win in the Oglethorpe Invitational last October.
Sophomore Peter Latimer (Markinch Fife, Scotland/Madras) owns the Quakers’ lowest stroke average (74.31) by a slim margin over junior teammate Burton Wood (Siler City, N.C./Jordan-Matthews (UNC Greensboro)) (74.89). Wood, the reigning Old Dominion Athletic Conference Golfer of the Week, finished in ninth place at the Marine Federal Credit Union Intercollegiate last week.
Guilford returns to action April 7-8 as it travels to Stone Mountain, Ga. for the Emory Spring Invitational.
