Greensboro Baseball: Greensboro 7, SU 2

Winchester, Va. — Daniel Poindexter went 4-5 with 3 runs and a grand slam home run as Greensboro College defeated Shenandoah, 7-2, in a USA South game on Saturday.

Poindexter broke open a 3-2 game with 2 outs in the ninth inning. Tyler O’Neill was 3-4 for The Pride.

Starter Torrey Poholsky (5-1) pitched a complete game and got the win. He allowed 6 hits, no earned runs, struck out 7 Hornets and walked 2.

The Pride’s unsung hero was shortstop Jacob Tomb. Trailing 3-2 in the eighth, Scott Van Dusseldorp hit a hard smash that Pride shortstop Tomb was able to make a diving stop on. Tomb quickly got up and threw a strike to the plate, beating the sliding Scott Lambert, who was trying to score from third, by a step.

The Pride (23-12, 6-4) clinched no lower than a fourth place finish in the conference. Shenandoah (17-17, 5-6) is locked in a the fifth slot. The Pride still has a shot to edge out Methodist for the third seed in next week’s conference tournament.

Brian Colbert collected 3 hits for the home team.
