Spring Sports Report:Vandalia has a good team…

Tyler Biggs, Nick Taylor, Brad Horton, Tyler Haley, Brandon Marchisotto, Mitchell Matthews, Ryan White, John Grant, Caleb Shelton, Steven Conger. All of these kids play good, solid, sound fundamental baseball and they used those skills to defeat Gospel Light Christian 13-1 yesterday at Ernie Shore Field in Winston-Salem.

The ten kids I mentioned at the top of the article play for the Vandalia Christian Vikings and they were in top form on Tuesday. I was especially impressed with Tyler Biggs at shortstop, the VCS second baseman, and their left fielder who made two outstanding catches in the bottom of the fifth inning to make sure that VCS closed out the game with the ten-run rule in effect after five innings.

Biggs made some solid plays at SS and the second baseman knocked down a hard hit ball in the infield to rob Gospel Light of a key base hit and the left fielder for VCS made those plays and one of those was with his back up against the left field wall in a professional baseball stadium. That’s getting pretty deep brother.

Aaron Jones didn’t have his best stuff for Gospel Light but he did strike out eight Vandalia batters, but he also issued five walks. Defensively, Jones didn’t have a lot of help backing him up but let’s give credit to the Luke Oates-coached Vandalia team, this was their time to shine on a very cold and windy day at Ernie Shore Field in Winston-Salem.

The top of the Vandalia order was hitting the ball all over the place with Biggs, Taylor, Horton, Haley, and Marchisotto all getting involved. Biggs drove in 3 runs, Horton went 2-2 with a triple, Taylor had two singles, Haley had a couple of singles and an RBI, and Marchisotto had a triple. John Grant got the win on the mound for Vandalia.

It was a Biggs day for the Vandalia Christian Vikings and we got a chance to see the rest of the story after our first article on the Gospel Light-Vandalia game from a few weeks back and we paid to get in, and that doesn’t happen every day, in fact that doesn’t happen on any day, but we try to help out with the cause when the private schools are using the private facilities like the Ernie Shore Field Complex. They even brought in JJ Jeffries from WSJS/WMFR 600/1230 radio as the public address announcer.

Vandalia wins the game 13-1 and now the Vikings are (14-4) and should be a threat to win the Christian Schools state championship.

Also on Tuesday, High Point Wesleyan defeated High Point Christian 4-1 with Michael Dimock going 2-2 for HPW and the Trojans winning pitcher Will Meyers was 2-3 with 2RBI’s. Western Guilford roughed up Bartlett Yancey 12-2 with Macon Smith having a huge day with a home run and 4RBI’s and he was 2-4 at the plate. The winning pitcher for the Hornets was Benji Marrero and WG is starting to look tough entering the Triad 3-A conference tournament later this week at Stoner-White Stadium. Coach Chris Causey has done a very good job with this Hornet squad.

Northeast Guilford, a traditional Triad 3-A power, has cooled off some in the past few years but they may be making a late comeback, after yesterday’s 4-2 win over Rockingham County. Zach Moore had 10 strikeouts for the Rams in the victory. Northwest Guilford rolled over Page, on the Pirates’ Senior Night, 9-1. Pitcher Robbie McIntosh was strong again for NWG with 11K’s and now NWG is (15-7/6-4) heading into the Metro 4-A tournament later this week. Page closes out the regular season at (5-12/3-7).

In that Major Tennis Matchup we were promoting on yesterday’s blog, the Grimsley Whirlies defeated the Page Pirates at UNCG to claim the top seed in the Metro for the playoffs. The Whirlies and Pirates finished the regular season tied for the top spot and Grimsley won out in yesterday’s match 5-4 over the Pirates. Conner Sherwood, Grimsley’s #1 man in singles and doubles led GHS to their win over Page.
