The Army Black Knights tuned up for next weekend’s Patriot League Tournament by sweeping NJIT, Sunday afternoon on Senior Day at Doubleday Field.
Army (23-22) recorded its sixth shutout in the opener, winning 9-0, then piled up a double digit run total for the 12th time this season during a 13-4 victory in the nightcap.
In the second inning Andy Ernesto drew a one-out walk, Cole White singled to left and J.P. Polchinski(Ragsdale HS) scored both runners with a double to the gap in right-center field.
An RBI double by Clint Moore(Grimsley HS) and a run-scoring groundout by Andy Ernesto stretched the Black Knights’ lead to 5-0 in the fourth. Polchinski walked and later scored on a wild pitch in the fifth, extending Army’s lead to 6-0.
Chris Simmons wasted little time placing his stamp on the nightcap, blasting his second grand slam of the season, a monster blast over the fence in center field, in the bottom of the first inning. Army had loaded the bases against NJIT starter P.J. Saporito (1-11) on a leadoff single by Clint Moore and a pair of hit batsmen.
J.P. Polchinski finished 2-for-3 with one run scored and two runs batted in to spearhead Army’s 10-hit attack in the first game.
