Alaska Native Leads Team With 28 May Strikeouts; Former Hopper Also Honored

Greensboro, N.C. – Nearly a week after being selected to participate in the upcoming South Atlantic League All-Star Game, Greensboro’s Corey Madden was tabbed the Marlins’ pitcher of the month for May, the organization announced Tuesday.

Madden led the Grasshoppers bullpen with a 2-0 record, three holds and 0.57 ERA in 10 relief appearances during the month. Over 15.2 innings of work, Madden allowed only eight hits and one earned run, while walking six and striking out 28. Madden, a 21st round selection in the 2006 draft, held opposing batters to a .157 average. Despite coming out of the bullpen, Madden led the team in strikeouts.

The Marlins’ organization also named former Greensboro infielder Gaby Sanchez as their player of the month. In 27 games with Double-A Carolina, Sanchez led the club with a .340 batting average while splitting time between first and third base. The Marlins’ fourth round pick of the 2005 First-Year Player Draft scored 15 runs on 34 hits, including seven doubles, two home runs and 16 RBI. Sanchez drew 16 walks and stole six bases in seven attempts. Sanchez’s on-base percentage of .433 was a team-high for May.
