Former WKEW and Greensboro Hornets announcer will be calling the Braves games next year…..

Tony Schiavone used to call the Greensboro Hornets games on AM1400 WKEW back in 1980, and later he was the voice of the Charlotte O’S and NWA/WWF/WCW wrestling. Next year(2009) Tony will be the baseball play-by-play man for the new Triple-A Gwinnett Braves who are moving from Richmond, Virginia down to Georgia.

Here’s the story on Schiavone, the man who used to work at War Memorial Stadium and at the WKEW AM1400 studios on Summit Avenue.

LAWRENCEVILLE – Residents won’t have to go to the ballpark to keep up with the Gwinnett Braves.

Officials announced a five-year exclusive radio partnership for the Triple-A team, which will begin play next year, with WDUN Newstalk 550 AM radio.

The station will air pre- and post-game shows with broadcasts of all 144 regular season games and any playoff games.

“WDUN 550 will be a great partner for us, and we look forward to having them start the team’s new chapter in Gwinnett,” Gwinnett Braves general manager Bruce Baldwin said.

WSB radio sports director Tony Schiavone will be the play-by-play announcer, and he will be joined in the booth for all home games by Judd Hickinbotham, according to a press release.
