Saturday Night’s All Right for Fighting at WFMY TV 2…

I received this E-mail from one of our GREENSBOROSports.com readers this week:

EliteXC is supposed to have another event this Saturday night. Wonder if channel 2 will be covering this one or do we have to send the attack dogs from greensborosports.com after them????????

I received this E-mail from WFMY News 2 this morning:

The CBS EliteXC Saturday Night Fights will air on Saturday July 26th at 9:00pm on WFMY News 2.

DAVID BRISCOE
Program Director
WFMY News 2 and digtriad.com

Main event (televised on CBS and WFMY):
Elite XC middleweight champion “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler (15-4) vs Scott “Hands of Steel” Smith (13-4)

CBS card (televised):
170 lbs.: Jake Shields (20-4-1) vs Nick “The Goat” Thompson (36-9-1) for vacant Elite XC welterweight championship
160 lbs.: Nick Diaz (17-7) vs Thomas “Wildman” Denny (26-16)
140 lbs.: Shayna Baszler (9-4) vs Cristiane “Cris” Cyborg (4-0){Female Battle]

CBS Sports play-by-play announcer Gus Johnson, cageside analysts Frank Shamrock and Mauro Ranallo, and reporter Karyn Bryant will return as the “CBS ELITEXC SATURDAY NIGHT FIGHTS” broadcast team and also have the call for the SHOWTIME telecast.(Showtime runs 8-9pm)

CBS’s inaugural mixed martial arts broadcast on May 31, 2008 dominated its time period in all key young men and young adult demographics. The total viewership increased throughout the night, peaking at 6.51m viewers for the Kimbo Slice vs. James Thompson fight. The entire broadcast (9:00-11:51 PM) averaged 4.85m viewers.

The intense nature of the contests and the theatrical elements of its live events have made mixed martial arts one of the fastest growing spectator sports in the U.S. Over the last several years, the genre has seen tremendous growth in popularity, especially among the coveted 18-34 demographic.

*****portions of this entry came from yahoo sports at yahoo.com and selected MMA sites*****
+++++They were showing the UFC pay-per-views at the J. Butler’s Restaurant on New Garden Road. They stopped carrying the LIVE pay-per-views when a fight broke out in their restaurant. They were showing UFC action from SPIKE TV last Saturday night so it makes you wonder if they will show the CBS EliteXC this Saturday.+++++

Are WFMY and Mr. Briscoe making the right call in showing us these fights or should they stick to showing the “Leonard Simpson, Homer Simpson and Greg Kerr go to Summer Camp re-runs”? WFMY still owes us a box of popcorn and a basket of hot chips for the last fight they failed to show us. Does this make it all right with all of the fight fans and NEWS 2 now that WFMY has decided to get in the ring? Do you love NEWS 2 and digtriad.com again?
