News & Record Headline Writers Need a Break!

I was looking on the News & Record website today, when i saw this headlineHoppers get greedy in victory. JR, please let these folks out a bit.

Just because Michael Stanton hit a 2 run homer in the 9th with a 6 to 1 lead does not mean they are greedy. Michael doubled at his first at bat, he was hit at his second at bat. Grounds out (with a new pitcher) at his third at bat. After another pitching change by Hagerstown, Michael hits his Home Run.

Remember that this is a developmental league, Michael faced 3 different pitchers. You want him to do his best at bat against each new situation, which a new pitcher fits that bill. Now if Hagerstown had left the same pitcher in throughout the game, that would have been greedy. If these kids don’t do their best with every opportunity, they may never see Jupiter, Zebulon or Albuquerque.

Plus, it’s always good to win a few when you have lost so many.

  1. The writer probably got socially promoted through college and nobody ever said he/she ever did anything wrong.
Probably felt some Oprah-style compassion for the team that got the score “run up” on them….

  2. DON, YOU ARE SO ON THE MONEY, AS USUAL. I READ THAT LINE AND THOUGHT “WHAT IN THE HELL DOES THAT MEAN?” THE PERSON THAT WROTE IT, I’LL BET, NEVER PLAYED AN OUNCE OF SPORT. NOW, YOU DON’T HAVE TO DIE TO BE A GOOD FUNERAL DIRECTOR, BUT AT LEAST KNOW HOW TO DESCRIBE A DAMNED SPORTING EVENT IN A TERM THAT IS SOMEWHAT RELEVANT TO WHAT ACTUALLY OCCURRED.

  3. So I guess when you’re up by 5 towards the end of the game, you need to strike out on purpose.
That would have gone over really well.
I also asume that we should run the bases backwards as well to give them a chance to catch up.
I’m disappointed that we have people writing this junk in our paper who have obviously never watched a 5 run comeback.

  4. Enough piling on….

Writing headlines is usually done by a person that did not write the article. Good chance they keyed on the last line of the article in a hurry to get other headlines written. With all the cut-backs in news, there’s a good chance that the News & Record only has 1 or 2 people to write EVERY HEADLINE for each paper. Imagine being told “GO” you now have 15 minutes to write headlines for the entire paper.

My point was to have the News & Record headline folks come out and enjoy a game, so that they aren’t writing headlines without some sort of reference.

I was thinking about the headline I would write about the pictures in the Rhino. I’d probably be as guilty misrepresenting some of those folks.

  5. Come on let’s pile on! 😀

It was inexcusable a mistake, and someone’s head should be lopped off with garden shears and displayed in front of the Park Library (the only place true journalists can gather in NC) as a beacon to future headline writers!

The pictures in the Rhino, I do not think that those peops would notice if you mislabel their intentions and motivations. They just want to get their swerve on.
