Guilford College Weekly Wrap Up

Guilford’s women’s soccer team went 1-1 in Atlanta, Ga., over the weekend. The Quakers beat Spelman College Saturday, 3-1, behind goals by Lauren Matthews, Amanda Sperr and Jordan Miller. The Quakers’ volleyball team went 1-3 at the Eastern Mennonite Invitational this weekend. On Saturday, Catholic held off a furious Guilford comeback to win, 3-2. The Quakers erased a 2-0 deficit with a pair of tight wins in the third and fourth sets. Anna Miller had 16 kills in the game. Earlier in the day, Guilford lost to Frostburg, 3-0.

On Friday, the Quakers split their season-opening matches. After falling to the University of Mary Washington, 3-0, Guilford bounced back Friday night to take a 3-0 decision from Mary Baldwin College. Stephanie Blankenship paced the Quakers in the match with nine kills.

Guilford’s men’s soccer team lost twice at the season-opening Sonny Carter Invitational, hosted by Emory University in Atlanta. The host Eagles, ranked 13th in NCAA Division III, jumped out to a 6-0 halftime lead into an 8-0 triumph Saturday afternoon. Jonathan Shine made three of Guilford’s four saves in goal. Guilford’s cross country teams opened the season with ninth-place finishes among 10 scoring teams at the Blue Marlin Invitational Saturday in Virginia Beach, Va. Grace Normann paced the women’s effort, completing the six-kilometer course in 27:22. Tyler Brown led Guilford’s men with a time of 31:29 over the eight-kilometer course, which placed 37th among 80 runners. The 2008 class of inductees into Guilford’s Sports Hall of Fame was announced Thursday. The class includes Leslie Bowerman Blincoe ’82 (volleyball) of Virginia Beach, Va., Joe D. Floyd, Sr. ’53 (baseball, football) of High Point, N.C., Brenda Davis Goble ’94 (basketball, volleyball) of Terre Haute, Ind., Michael Jay Hutcheon ’89 (golf) of High Point, N.C., and Max O. Welborn, Sr. ’52 (basketball, Quaker Club) of Yadkinville, N.C. The inductees will be honored in a ceremony on campus Sept. 13 at 4:00 p.m. and at the Guilford-Methodist football game later that evening.
