GREENSBORO, N.C. — Freshmen quarterbacks Russell Wilson from NC State and Miami’s Robert Marve headline the Atlantic Coast Conference Football Players of the Week awards for the games of Sept. 20. Wilson threw for 210 yards and three touchdowns in leading the Wolfpack to a 30-24 overtime upset win over 15th-ranked East Carolina while Marve tossed two TD’s in leading the Hurricanes to a convincing, 41-23 win over Texas A&M. Joining them this week are Georgia Tech offensive tackle Andrew Gardner, Miami linebacker Glen Cook, Wake Forest safety Kevin Patterson and placekicker Sam Swank.
Wilson earned Offensive Back of the Week as he led the Wolfpack on a seven-play, 55-yard drive to force overtime in NC State’s 30-24 overtime win over the Pirates. Miami’s Marve claimed Rookie of the Week honors as he completed 16 of 22 passes for 212 yards in leading the Hurricanes to the triumph over the Aggies at College Station.
Georgia Tech’s Gardner earns his second Offensive Lineman of the Week honor as he anchored the Yellow Jacket offense that rushed for 438 yards to roll over Mississippi State 38-7. He was previously honored for his play against Jacksonville State on Sept. 1. Miami’s Cook claimed Defensive Lineman of the Week honors after returning a fumble two yards for a touchdown in the Hurricanes’ 41-23 triumph over Big 12 foe Texas A&M. Cook also had nine tackles in the game, one shy of a career high.
Patterson took Defensive Back of the Week honors by taking part in three of the Demon Deacons’ seven takeaways on Saturday against Florida State. Swank nets his second Specialist of the Week honor as he accounted for all 12 of Wake Forest’s points in their 12-3 win over Florida State. Swank converted on four field goal attempts to set a new school record and move to third place on the ACC field goals list with 69 career three-pointers. He was previously honored for his play against Mississippi on Sept. 8.
OFFENSIVE BACK–Russell Wilson, NC State, QB, 5-11, 191, Fr., Richmond, Va.
Wilson completed 21 of 31 pass attempts for 210 yards and three touchdowns in the Wolfpack’s thrilling overtime win over ECU. All three of his touchdown passes tied the game. Wilson directed the Pack on a 7 play, 55-yard touchdown drive to force overtime. Wilson completed four of five passes for 56 yards on the drive, including a 26-yarder to Jarvis Williams on the first play of the sequence, and a 17-yarder to Andre Brown on the next play to set the Pack up with a first down at the ECU 29.
OFFENSIVE LINEMAN–Andrew Gardner, Georgia Tech, T, 6-6, 305, Sr., Tyrone, Ga.
Gardner was instrumental in Georgia Tech producing 438 rushing yards – the fifth highest single-game rushing total in school history and the most since 1978. Gardner played every significant snap in the 38-7 Yellow Jacket victory as Tech rolled up 500 yards of total offense.
DEFENSIVE LINEMAN– Glen Cook, Miami, ILB, 6-0, 228, Sr., Hollywood, Fla.
Cook picked up a season-high nine tackles (three solo and six assisted) – one shy of his career-high – and returned a fumble for a touchdown. It was his second career fumble return for a TD. He knocked the ball loose, picked it up and ran it back two yards for a touchdown in the third quarter giving the Hurricanes a 41-10 lead. He also had a half tackle for loss. Cook leads the Hurricanes with 18 total tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss.
DEFENSIVE BACK–Kevin Patterson, Wake Forest, S, 5-10, 191, Sr., Kingsland, Ga.
Patterson accounted for three of Wake Forest’s seven takeaways in the 12-3 win over Florida State. Patterson had two interceptions and forced a fumble. Patterson’s first interception came in the second quarter when he picked off a Christian Ponder pass and returned it 32 yards. Early in the fourth quarter, Patterson hit Preston Parker and forced him to cough up the ball which was recovered by Michael Carter. With Wake leading 9-3 with just over 4 minutes to play in the game, Patterson intercepted a D’Vontrey Richardson pass and returned it 22 yards. Patterson had six tackles in the game including three solos and three assists.
SPECIALIST–Sam Swank, Wake Forest, PK, 6-2, 201, Sr., Jacksonville Beach, Fla.
Swank booted a career-high four field goals in leading Wake Forest to a 12-3 win over No. 24/25 Florida State in Tallahassee on Saturday. Swank converted on tries from 48, 29, 49 and 31 yards to set a new career high and move into third place on the ACC career field goal list. Swank also set a Wake Forest school record with seven attempts in the game.
ROOKIE–Rookie – Robert Marve, Miami, QB, 6-1, 220, Fr., Tampa, Fla.
Marve, making his second career start, completed 16-of-22 passes for 212 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in helping lead Miami to a 41-23 win over Texas A&M. He threw his first career touchdown with 20 seconds remaining in the first half – a 26 yarder to freshman receiver Thearon Collier. Marve completed 13 of his first 16 passes. For the game, he completed 72.7 percent of his passes and had a passer efficiency of 174.58.
