Greensboro, N.C. (9-24-08) – Brandon Massie scored two second-half goals as visiting Virginia Wesleyan College downed Guilford College Wednesday afternoon in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference match. Massie struck twice in a four-minute span of the second half to triple a 1-0 halftime lead.
The Marlins (2-4, 1-1 ODAC) gained the initial advantage when John McKenzie came off the bench in the first half and fired a loose ball over and across Guilford goalie Peter Truitt from about 20 yards out. Truitt made three of his six saves in the active opening half in which both teams found good scoring chances.
Massie doubled the Marlins’ edge when he collected the rebound of an Adam Beck shot and put it past Truitt. The goal triggered a 4-0 Virginia Wesleyan burst over the next 18 minutes that effectively put the game out of reach.
Goalies Ryan Zmuda (2 saves) and Jordan Martin combined on the shutout for Virginia Wesleyan. Truitt made six saves and yielded four goals in 75:34 before giving way to Patrick Childs.
The Quakers (0-7, 0-2 ODAC) continue league play Saturday (9/27) at Randolph-Macon College at 3:00 p.m.
