Greensboro, N.C. — Guilford College senior Burton Wood (Siler City, N.C./Jordan-Matthews (UNC Greensboro)) won the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Golfer of the Week Award and Guilford’s Student-Athlete of the Week Award Monday. The Student-Athlete of the week prize is presented by the Quakers’ Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
Burton Wood
Wood placed third among 87 competitors at the Greensboro College Invitational September 29-30 at Bryan Park. He finished first among all ODAC contestants and had Guilford’s best showing with a one-over-par 145 (71-74) over 36 holes, which helped the Quakers take third among 16 teams. His first-round score of 71 was a team low at the Invitational. Wood’s stroke average of 74.40 in five rounds ranks second on the team. He has twice received the ODAC’s weekly award in his career.
The Greensboro College Invitational marked Guilford’s second top-three finish in as many tournaments. Coach Jack Jensen’s club is ranked 11th in the Sept. 25th Golf World/Nike Golf Division III Coaches’ Poll. The Quakers play Oct. 13-14 at the Duke Coco-Cola Classic at Duke University Golf Club.
Guilford’s SAAC is comprised of representatives from each of the school’s 16 varsity teams. The group meets regularly to discuss the state of Guilford Athletics and seeks to build community among student-athletes and non-student-athletes on the campus. Other recent Guilford SAAC activities include a canned-food drive to benefit local charities and dodgeball competitions among representatives from Guilford’s administration and athletic teams.
