GREENSBORO, N.C. – Chris Killian’s interception in the end zone with seven seconds left preserved Bridgewater College’s 27-20 Old Dominion Athletic Conference football win at Guilford College Saturday afternoon.
The Quakers (3-3, 0-2 ODAC) were trying to erase a 14-point deficit after William Davis’ second field goal gave the Eagles (2-4, 1-1 ODAC) a 27-13 lead with 9:42 remaining in the game. Guilford pulled to within 27-20 on Josh Vogelbach’s four-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Vaughn with 7:37 left. The Eagles took the ensuing possession inside Guilford’s 10-yard line, but on third-and-one, the Quakers’ Danny Langston ended the drive with his team-leading fourth interception of the year.
Vogelbach moved the Quakers 87 yards in the next 3:40 thanks to five-for-eight passing. A Bridgewater pass interference penalty with 22 seconds remaining gave Guilford first and goal from the Eagles’ six-yard line. After an incompletion, Killian stepped in front of Vaughn and made the Eagles’ second interception deep in their own territory. T.J. Montague grabbed a deflected pass on his own two-yard line in the final seconds of the first half.
In addition to the two drive-killing interceptions, Bridgewater’s defense forced two second-half fumbles that led to 10 Eagles’ points. Brandon Mitchell returned a fumble 54 yards for a third-quarter score that gave Bridgewater a 24-13 lead. Moments later, Scottie Littles recovered a Vogelbach fumble on the Quakers’ 12-yard line, which set up a 22-yard Davis field goal.
Bridgewater’s David Argaud had 17 carries for a game-high 163 yards, including a 50-yard run in the second quarter that led to the Eagles’first score, an eight-yard pass from reserve quarterback Vince Reese to Tyler Beiler. Anthony Carter added 75 rushing yards on nine carries, including a 52-yard scoring run in the third quarter.
Guilford’s Vogelbach completed 21 of 38 passes for 297 yards and three touchdowns. Vaughn made a game-high eight catches for 104 yards and two scores. Teammate Hagen Miller had six grabs for 99 yards, including a 46-yard first-quarter touchdown. Justin Parker cleared the 100-yard rushing mark for the fourth time with 113 yards on 23 carries. Markas Brunson made a career-high three sacks, all in the first half, among his season-high eight tackles.
The Quakers return to action next Saturday (10/25) at league-rival Washington and Lee University. The Eagles host Emory & Henry College Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
