College Women’s Soccer Final – Roanoke 3, Guilford 0

GREENSBORO, N.C. (10-22-08) – Meredith Grunewald scored a goal and had two assists in visiting Roanoke College’s 3-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) soccer win at Guilford College Wednesday. The Maroons improve to 8-6-2 overall, 6-2-1 in the ODAC. Guilford slips to 7-10 (5-4 ODAC) after losing its final home match of the year.

Grunewald opened the scoring in the 11th minute with a hard, angled shot that slipped through Guilford goalie Amber Stapler for her team-leading 12th goal of the season. A little over five minutes later, a fine Grunewald through ball sprung Melissa Laughlin on a breakaway. Laughlin outran the Guilford defenders and slotted the ball past Stapler for her first goal of the year and a 2-0 Maroons’ lead.

The scored remained 2-0 in favor of the Maroons as Roanoke’s defense effectively controlled Guilford forwards Jackie D’Orsaneo and Jada Daniel, who have combined to score 10 of the Quakers last 18 goals. A Grunewald cross with just over 13 minutes remaining connected with an open Kristen McCoy, who netted her eighth goal of the year.

Both teams took 13 shots. Roanoke goalie Lindsay Kooiman made three first-half saves for her fifth shutout of the year. Stapler, one of five Guilford seniors playing their final home game, made four stops, all in the second half.

Guilford returns to action Saturday (10/25) at league-rival Washington and Lee University at 3:00 p.m. Roanoke visits Randolph-Macon College Saturday (10/25) for a 3:00 league match.
