Maynard comes up BIG for Buffalo Bulls

How about the kid from Grimsley High School in Greensboro, North Carolina?????

“Zach Maynard, who played several snaps for the Bulls out of the shotgun formation, burst through a hole on the right side and sprinted 41 yards for the longest rush of his short career.”

Buffalo delighted 16,058 fans at UB Stadium and Bulls’ fans all over the country watching on ESPN2 by rolling up 476 yards of offense, forcing two turnovers and beating Miami University, 37-17, to improve to 5-4 on the season and 3-2 in the Mid-American Conference. With the victory, the Bulls have their first three-game winning streak since 1996.

The RedHawks would not go away after intermission. They took the opening kickoff of the second half, and aided by two 15-yard penalties on Buffalo, scored on a three-yard run by J.R. Taylor to cut the lead to 21-17 with 12:05 left in the third quarter.

Once again, however, the Bulls responded, this time behind the Bulls’ backup quarterback, freshman Zach Maynard. Maynard, who played several snaps for the Bulls out of the shotgun formation, burst through a hole on the right side and sprinted 41 yards for the longest rush of his short career.

Quarterback prospect who is an equal threat to run or pass…passed for 1,635 yards and 20 touchdowns and rushed for 1,404 yards and 14 scores during his senior season at Grimsley High School…named All-Area and All-Conference for head coach Jeff Smouse(Mark Saunders/2007)…led his team to a conference championship in 2007…chose UB because of the “coaching staff and their beliefs.”

  1. Yes, that was from the Buffalo Univeristy site and we added in Coach Saunders name for the current update. I think you are right. Coach Smouse was at Lumberton and then he moved over to RAD.

We thank Keith for the tip on the game with Zach Maynard last night playing QB for Buffalo U on ESPN.

  2. The Jeff Smouse-coached Raleigh Athens Drive team went (11-2/6-1) last season and they stand at (2-7) in 2008.

  3. Andy,

I am going to let you in on a secret, the reason why it said Jeff Smouse is because the parents of Zach Maynard didnt want them to say Mark Saunders as his coach. All Mark did was tell coaches that Zach was not going to be eligilible for college. His parents asked Coach Shuping and Coach O if he could put them down as his coach they both said yes but the Coaches at Buffalo decided to just use Coach Smouse.

  4. Great job by Zach Maynard at Grimsley and now that has led to the solid work he is doing at Buffalo. From what I am hearing he will be the starter for the Bulls next season.

Sometimes we are better off not why or how some things happen but we do know that all of the Whirlies that have moved on and are still playing are doing well and we say good job to all. Jamaral Rease at UNC-Pembroke, Lionel Shoffner at Elon, Brandon Peguese at Hampton, Micah Daub at Wingate, David Moore at Guilford, Kelsey Stevens at the JUCO in California(Siskyus) and we hear Kelsey may be getting contact from TCU. Good job by all.

There is a lot going on and our readers are keeping us busy.
