Pizza Hut Invitational Basketball Tournament seednigs/pairings announced

The pairings for the Pizza Hut Invitational Basketball Tournament were announced today and the Greensboro Day School Bengals are the men’s #1 seed and for the women, Northwest Guilford is the top seed.

This year’s tournament will run January 1 ,2, and 3 in the Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center. That will be Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the end of the high school’s Christmas vaction. I guess you can still say Christmas vacation without creating a stir down at the County Office. If not we will just call it the holiday vaction this year.

I know you can say Pizza Hut and the title sponsor has been involved with this tournament since 1989. James DuBose and his associates at Commodore Restaurants have been a huge factor in the continuation of this annual holiday event that goes all the way back to 1976 when the first ball went up, with the boys teams from Grimsley, Page, Dudley, and Smith.

This year’s tournament co-chairmen are Kevin McCoy and Jim Gentry and the promotional/media assistance will again come from Rob Goodman at 3G-Sports. Demp Bradford and Marc Bush, from the Greensboro Sports Commission, will also help to oversee on-site coordination of this major undertaking.

Freddy Johnson and his assistant coach Jeff Smith were on hand today at the Greensboro Coliseum to see the Bengals go up on the board as the top men’s seed. With Javan Mitchell, Christian Pulliam, Ryan Carty and others returning from last year’s championship team, the Bengals are your favorites as the event approaches. Darlene Joyner and her Vikings, with Gretchen Bennett and Hannah McIntosh in place at NWG, are touted as having the best shot to claim the women’s crown.

  1. I am excited about the entire tournament. The boys pairings was pretty much predictable. A few surprises. It looks like the boys games wont get interesting until the semis. The girls pairings gets good with the 2nd-7th seed games. I had recently seen the NG girls play and they might give Ragsdale a run for their money. Page and Smith game seems interesting. Besides Page’s Chevena Pickard, I’m curious to see what else they have. If Smith pull out the guns like they did on Dudley last year in the tournament, we might have a upset. Havent seen Grimsley or NEG girls play this year yet but I know both teams are recovering from major senior losses. I will wait to give any predictions.

  2. The #4 Page vs. #5 Grimsley at 4pm men’s game will be an interesting one. Wouldn’t be too surprised to see the Page boys in the final.

  3. Saw NG play recently–even with a youthful bench, they will bring a spark to the tournament.
