GREENSBORO, N.C. – Starmount Forest Country Club has officially opened its new indoor Fitness and Tennis Center making Starmount a one-of-a-kind facility in Greensboro. Grand Opening and Ribbon-Cutting ceremonies were held today.

In keeping with Greensboro’s effort to grow as a great place to live and work, Starmount Forest Country Club is an example of economic growth in a period of financial uncertainty. The Greensboro club has been a pillar of the community since it was founded in 1930. After a brief news conference, Greensboro Mayor Yvonne Johnson and United States Congressman Howard Coble cut the ribbon officially opening the new facility.

With the addition of its 36,000 square-foot Indoor Fitness and Tennis Center, Starmount is the only place in Greensboro where golf, indoor and outdoor tennis, fitness, pool and full food, beverage and banquet facilities are available at the same location. Other entities may offer similar amenities, but no other place in Greensboro offers them at a single location.

“Thank you for promoting a healthy community,” Greensboro Mayor Yvonne Johnson said. “Exercise and sports are quality activities, and you have helped raise the bar in our City.”

“Today is a great day for Starmount Forest Country Club and the city of Greensboro,” Starmount Forest Country Club general manager Bruce Klappa said. “Starmount has offered first-class facilities to its members and guests since 1930, but the addition of indoor tennis and fitness really makes us one-stop-shopping. A family can come to Starmount and enjoy the golf course, the fitness center, tennis courts and then meet at the pool to have lunch and enjoy a perfect Greensboro summer day.”

“We invested a great deal of time in studying members of our community who enjoy an active lifestyle,” Starmount Forest Country Club president Larry Diana said. “Through our research, we learned that those active people were interested in recreational facilities that offered, among other things, fitness and indoor tennis; we had neither. Having all of these amenities at one location allows families with varying interests to participate in multiple activities at the same location. That diversity sets us apart from other recreation locations.”

The four indoor tennis courts feature the DecoTurf Premium Cushioned surface, which is the same court surface used for the Olympics, the U.S. Open and NCAA Tennis Championships. Its multi-layer cushion system affords maximum player comfort and exceptional durability throughout the life of the court. One hundred percent acrylic resins and select SBR rubber granules assure that DecoTurf’s cushion system remains resilient for decades. The existing tennis pro shop was completely renovated and will serve as the tennis headquarters for the new indoor courts as well as the four outdoor clay courts.

Tennis professional Carlin Hall will oversee the tennis facilities; she joined the Starmount staff after graduating from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 2004. She is a certified member of the United States Professional Tennis Association with a professional one rating. The Goldsboro, N.C. native was an all Southern Conference member of the Lady Spartan tennis team. Teaching professional Tom Herb is also a member of the Starmount staff.

The two-story, 7,000 square-foot fitness facility has equipment supplied by Technogym, the official provider of fitness equipment for the last four Olympic Games. Technogym is a world leader in the manufacturing and marketing of durable, well designed and biomechanically precise fitness equipment – suitable for users of all ages and fitness levels. The first floor of the fitness center includes a massage room, two classrooms for spin, Pilates, yoga and other classes as well as the locker rooms, steam and sauna rooms.

The second story includes treadmills, elliptical machines, as well as both recumbent and upright stationary bikes. Flat-screen television monitors hang from the fitness-center ceiling for patrons using the aerobic conditioning equipment. The gym also includes a full circuit of weight-training machines and a universal cable machine as well as free weights, exercise balls and bands to complete the facility. Personal trainers and licensed massage therapists are on staff.

Sheryl Beauregard is Starmount’s new Fitness Director and will oversee the fitness area. Beauregard came to Starmount from Moses Cone Hospital where she served as a clinical dietician. She has been providing group exercise service and personal training in the Piedmont Triad since 2001. A registered dietician, she has a Bachelor’s Degree in exercise and sport science as well as a Master’s Degree in Nutrition from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Kirkland Construction built the structure that was designed by Bradley and Ball Architects PA. After construction began in March, the $2 Million facility was completed during the last week of October. The facility opened during the first week of November. Since that time, the tennis and fitness facilities have enjoyed heavy use and rave reviews.

Starmount hosted the Wyndham Championship PGA TOUR event when it started in 1938 when Sam Snead won the first of his eight Greensboro tournaments. Starmount’s golf course currently serves as the home course for the University of North Carolina at Greensboro Lady Spartans and both golf teams at Grimsley High School.

In addition to the golf course, Starmount offers full golf practice facilities including a driving range and three putting greens, a 25-meter Olympic-style swimming pool with snack bar, four indoor tennis courts, four outdoor clay tennis courts, a fitness center, a full-service restaurant and bar in addition to full banquet facilities capable of handling groups up to 300 people seated.

Starmount Forest Country Club is accepting new members. Social membership initiation fees start at just $500; the club also offers golf memberships and non-resident memberships. Social members enjoy full access to all club amenities, including the new indoor tennis and fitness facility with limited access to the golf course.

Founded in 1930, Starmount Forest Country Club has been a part of the Greensboro landscape for nearly eight decades. Conveniently located just five minutes from downtown Greensboro, Starmount offers first-class amenities for both social and business purposes. The Starmount Forest Country Club Mission: Starmount Forest Country Club, in keeping with our long and rich tradition, is a welcoming, family-oriented club that strives to provide exceptional recreational and social activities for our members and guests. 2. In this economy the Country Club business is going to be a tough business for some time. Every club is down in membership and I don’t see that changing for sometime.
