CHRIS JOHNSON NAMED TO 2009 NFL PRO BOWL

 GREENVILLE, N.C. – Former East Carolina running back Chris Johnson was one of 42 players selected to represent the AFC in the NFL’s annual Pro Bowl on Sunday, Feb. 8 in Honolulu, Hawai’i the league announced Tuesday afternoon. The game will pit the top players from the NCF against the AFC and will be aired on NBC at 4:30 p.m. ET.For Johnson, the 24th overall selection by the Tennessee Titans in the 2008 NFL Draft, it will mark a return trip to Hawai’i following last year’s appearance in the Sheraton Hawai’i Bowl with the Pirates. A year ago, Johnson earned MVP honors after rushing for 223 yards (bowl record) and collecting 408 yards of total offense (bowl record) in ECU’s 41-38 win over Boise State.

The Orlando, Fla. native joins Hall of Fame rusher Earl Campbell as the only rookies in Titans franchise history to make the Pro Bowl. Johnson currently ranks second in the AFC and sixth in the NFL with 1,159 rushing yards and eight touchdowns. He ranks second in the AFC with 1,418 yards from scrimmage and fifth in the AFC with 62 first downs. Johnson is tied for sixth in the AFC with nine total touchdowns.

With his selection as a reserve running back, Johnson became the fifth Pirate in school history to be selected to the Pro Bowl following Tony Collins (1983), Earnest Byner (1990 and 1991), Jeff Blake (1995) and Rod Coleman (2005).

Pro Bowl selections are based on an equally-weighted vote of NFL players, coaches and fans.
