Dudley stops Cummings: Panthers over Cavaliers 94-71

The Dudley Panthers whipped the Burlington Cummings Cavaliers 94-71 Saturday night at the Dudley gymnasium.

Cummings got a fine effort from Wake Forest-bound JT Terrell, but it’s tough to top the Panthers on their home court and when you lose PJ Hairston to a concussion and still increase your first half lead, then you know, you have a true team. When Hairston went down, and he went down all the way to the floor after he got up and tried to walk off, and then he had to be carried off the court to the training room for medical attention.

While PJ was away, Chris Whitsett slamed home one of the prettiest monster dunks that’s ever been thrown down in the Dudley gym. Whitsett got another one before halftime, but that first jam was the one that you would see on the GSPN Sportscenter on Sunday morning. Trey Godette made some nice passes from the high post and he ended up with 4 assists and Brandon Pennix has picked up a new nickname, he is now “The Beast”, in addition to being “Bigs”.

Burlington Cummings had no answer for Pennix down low and “The Beast” finished with 27 points and 11 rebounds in 26 minutes. Pennix is an All-State type player and no one knows his role better than Pennix, as he sets up down low on the blocks. This kid is as strong as anybody that has ever come out of Guilford County and he is the recipiant of some super passes from point guard Brennan Wyatt and high post passer Godette. The final part of Pennix that pays the Panthers dividends is “the hands”. Pennix has great hands and he can catch almost any pass no matter where you throw it. Pennix was also a perfect 5-5 at the line for the Panthers last night.

Brennan Wyatt played all but 4 minutes of the game and he finished with 18 points and 7 assists. The “Real Deal” Reggie Dillard ended up with 13 points and he dished out 8 assists.

Hairston left the game with the concussion which I believe came when he went up high got hit and came down very hard on the Panthers’ hardwood floor. As is usually the norm, Hairston went over to a cell phone tower(phone booths are just about obsolete), put on his Superman cape, and he came back out at the start of the second half. It is gonna be hard to keep Hairston out of that Dudley lineup. Chipped bone in his finger, Concussion; this kid just keeps coming back…….

Chris Whitsett got his 7 points with the two dunks and a three pointer and he gave the team 23 minutes as the sixth man. The “Bird Man”, Dominique Byrd poured in 6 points off of the Panther bench in just 10 minutes of time.

Nice win by Dudley against a quality opponent and it was good to see Ray Crawford Sr., who tells us he has that Panther baseball field just about ready. We also saw the PA/Music/Sound Effects man for the baseball games at Dudley sitting over on press row along with Greensboro Batting Center owner Alan Ashkinazy and Zoe and we even ran into GTCC basketball assistant coach John Patty and as always Dudley AD Joe Godette had a good lock on the house and on the gate.

John Patty revealed his secret parking place at Dudley and it turns out it’s the Dudley Panther principal’s personal parking place and on this night it also turns out that the principal was sitting right beside JP when he spilled the beans about where he’s been parking when he comes over to Dudley games. The principal remarked that he wondered who got his place on this night and with the large crowd, a place to park was pretty much a lost art unless you found a spot up by the school entrance. Chances are that’s where Coach Patty will be parking in the future.

Good game, good crowd, and a good night was had by all in attendance.

  1. Dudley girls win it over Cummings and it was somewhere in the neighborhood of 73-50….Dudley girls had no porblem.

  2. We hear alot about Dudley’s sure shot shooter PJ Hariston (Varsity Boys) and Helen Terry (Varsity Girls), but anyone know anything about the Varsity Girls player (Drayton) mentioned in last weeks paper with Terry who had 18 or more rebounds, OUT-STANDING! Is this kid a hidden sleeper? Any one know?

Dudley’s Coach needs to nominate this kid for something.

  3. Desiree Drayton is a super young player and she can rebound with any kid we have in the county. She was very tough on the boards in both Dudley wins last week and she does deserve more credit than she is getting.

I would like to see her join the Phoenix girls travel program. She along with Brittany Drew and Miranda Jenkins have done a fine job for the Greensboro Galaxy the past couple of summers but it might be time to move up and on with Delaney Rudd and the Phoenix.

  4. We are hearing this morning that the score of the Dudley-Cummings girls game was more in the neighborhood of 60-28 Dudley.

Info coming in from good sources.
