No. 8 Tar Heels Down Georgia Tech, 73-50
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) -Cetera DeGraffenreid scored a career-high 22 points to help No. 8 North Carolina defeat Georgia Tech 73-50 on Sunday.
Italee Lucas added 13 points for the Tar Heels (22-4, 7-3 Atlantic Coast Conference), who bounced back from a 77-70 loss at No. 14 Florida State on Friday night.
Jessica Breland had 12 points and 11 rebounds, and Christina Dewitt had 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Tar Heels. North Carolina led 34-32 at halftime before breaking open the game with a 17-2 run in the first six minutes of the second half.
The Yellow Jackets made just one of their first 17 shots after halftime, going more than 10 minutes without a basket.
Wolfpack On Top At Hoops 4 Hope Game
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -Shayla Fields scored 19 points Sunday to help North Carolina State beat No. 17 Virginia 60-54 in an emotional game for the Wolfpack.
Nikitta Gartrell added 15 points for N.C. State (11-14, 3-7 Atlantic Coast Conference), which took control midway through the second half in the fourth annual “Hoops 4 Hope” event created by longtime coach Kay Yow to raise money and awareness for cancer research.
Yow died last month, more than two decades after first being diagnosed with breast cancer and about four years after the disease recurred.
Lyndra Littles scored 15 points for the Cavaliers (19-7, 5-5), who trailed by 10 in the first half before using a 16-0 run spanning halftime to take a 38-29 lead with 13 1/2 minutes left. But the Wolfpack regrouped, getting some clutch shots late from Fields and Gartrell to go back in front.
Wake Forest Turns Back Hokies 66-44
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Four Demon Deacon players scored in double figures to propel the Wake Forest women’s basketball team to a 66-44 victory over Virginia Tech on Sunday in Winston-Salem. Wake Forest is now 18-6 overall and 5-5 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Virginia Tech is 11-15, 1-10.
Demon Deacon Camille Collier led scoring efforts for both teams with 20 points and Alex Tchangoue was the top rebounder with 14 caroms. Utahya Drye led Virginia Tech with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Wake Forest took the win without the team’s second leading scorer, Corinne Groves, who sat out her second consecutive game with an illness.
No. 11/9 Maryland Women Rout Rutgers, 67-47
COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) – Marissa Coleman posted her fifth double-double of the season with a 22-point, 10-rebound performance to lead No. 11/9 Maryland to its fifth straight victory, 67-47 over Rutgers on Sunday at Comcast Center.
Kristi Toliver scored 18 for the Terrapins (21-4, 8-2 Atlantic Coast Conference), who bolted to a 14-2 lead and never trailed in their 32nd consecutive win at home. Coleman went 5-for-12 from the floor but made 12-of-14 free throws, her third straight game with at least 10 free throw attempts.
Epiphanny Prince led Rutgers (14-10, 5-6 Big East) with 19 points, although her 7-for-29 shooting performance contributed to the Scarlet Knights’ 25 percent field goal percentage. Rutgers was 5-for-26 from 3-point range, took only seven foul shots and committed 13 turnovers.
Maryland limited Rutgers to 7-for-37 shooting (19 percent) in the first half while building a 30-19 lead, although the Terps’ 30 first-half points served as its lowest point total in the first half at home this season.
