From the Greenville Daily Reflector on Dudley-Kinston/Northern Bertie

Kinston’s Reggie Bullock gave his future coach a glimpse of what he’s made of at Friday’s 3-A boys’ basketball Eastern Regional in Minges Coliseum.

Bullock, a 6-foot-7 junior forward who has already committed to play for North Carolina, scored a team-high 28 points and converted a pivotal rebound and putback with about 10 seconds left to play to lead the Vikings over Greensboro Dudley, 67-64, with UNC coach Roy Williams watching on press row.

With his club clinging to a 65-64 lead, Bullock rebounded a missed free throw by teammate Victor Holloway and hit a layup that produced the final score.

Dudley’s P.J. Hairston, a 6-6 sophomore who is also being recruited by the Tar Heels, took the Panthers’ final inbounds pass and was racing upcourt for a 3-point try that could have tied the game. But Viking Josh Benoit stole the ball from Hairston near the halfcourt stripe and dribbled out the clock to seal the victory for Kinston (27-3), which will play Northern Guilford tonight at 7 for the regional title.

Hairston led all players with 29 points, but 20 of those came in the second quarter. Reggie Dillard, a freshman, added 16 points for the Panthers (26-4).

Dallas Best scored 18 points for the Vikings and Holloway recorded a double-double with 10 points and 12 boards.

Northern Guilford 79
Bertie 48

Northern Guilford dominated Bertie in virtually every phase of the game en route to its blowout victory over Bertie in Friday’s first game at Minges.

The Nighthawks led by just two points — 28-26 — at halftime, but NG guard Michael Neal sparked a 16-5 run to start the second half and Neal’s layup with 3:18 left in the third quarter gave the Nighthawks (28-3) a 44-31 lead.

The Nighthawks continued to build on their lead and went ahead 79-47 — their biggest lead of the night — in the game’s dying minutes on a Justin Mitchell layup.

Neal led all players with 20 points while Frye added 12 points, eight rebounds and seven assists for Northern Guilford.

  1. Dudley’s 2-3 Zone defense allowed Reggie Bullock to score those points in the 3rd and 4th quarters. Reggie Dillard had locked him down when they played Man to Man. I was so upset that Dudley coaching allowed PJ Hairston to dribble up court with 8 seconds left and no plays were called. Brennan Wyatt can shoot the three, Chris Whitsett can shoot, and Reggie Dillard.

We, Dudley fans can blame the refs but no defensive adjustments were made when Bullock hit those 2 three point shots on a 2-3 Zone. I was so perturbed. I was in shambles. They did not box out, Trey Godette missing lay ups and shots. Barry Scoggins was more productive and he was on the bench. I am somewhat surprised. Kinston’s fans believed the better team lost the game. Hand check calls were not given as Wyatt broke their press. Turnovers were a factor too.

Sad to see coaching lose the game for the children. Dudley played a great game.
