Eccles excels, Cooke exhales: Both earn All-American honors at GC

They will likely be recognized next Monday night at NewBridge Bank Park during the baseball game vs. Guilford. (the 2007-08 Fred Joseph Award winners will also be officially announced then.)

Congrats to the All-Americans from Greensboro College, Dione Eccles(Basketball) and Alex Cooke(Swimming)…..Two All-Americans on the Pride campus at one time? Unheard of? Not now. Unbelievable? It’s true, yes it is TRUE!

Dione Eccles has been named All American by D3hoops.com. The senior guard was selected to the All America fourth team.

Eccles averaged 18.5 points, 6.7 rebounds, and set a Pride program record with 109 steals. She led the team to the best ever GC basketball season: 27-3. Eccles was a D3hoops second team all region selection, was the USA South player of the year and was picked to the conference’s first team.

“I’m happy for Dione and she is very deserving of this honor,” said GC Head Coach Jason Tuggle. “She had an exceptional senior season.”

Eccles becomes the 75th GC All American and the second women’s basketball. Staci Humphrey was honored in 2006 and ’07.

Minneapolis, Minn. — Greensboro College’s Alex Cooke (High Point, NC/SW Guilford) concluded the competition at the NCAA Division III Swimming Championships on Saturday. She competed in the 100 freestyle and set a new Pride record of 52:38. Cook entered the 100 free as the 53rd top competitor and finished 26th best.

The senior also set Pride records in the 50 free and the 100 back–where she was 16th and and earned All America status.

“This has been a great closure to Alex’s career,” said Pride Head Coach Scot Budde. “Her extra effort this season paid off. It’s also great for our program and an example of what Pride swimmers can accomplish.”
